Interior/Exterior R56 - Is there a DIY guide for taking Halogen headlights apart? Painted housing?
R56 - Is there a DIY guide for taking Halogen headlights apart? Painted housing?
What's going on guys? I'm considering to remove the orangle turn indicator from my halogen lights and at the same time take them apart to paint the housing yellow (except for the main part around the headlight bulb). I know there are many who have painted the lights on the xenon projector headlights and they do look sick!!! Unfortunately i dont have the xenons on my car yet i'd like to give it the same matching look by taking them apart and painting them.
Has anyone done this or can refer me to a DIY guide to disassemble the halogen headlights on an 07 Mini Cooper S (R56)?
Thanks in advance,
Will V

Try searching "joey mod". There are numerous write ups on how to do it on the site. If you can't find a write up on the halogen, just follow the guide on xenon. It's pretty self explanatory once you open the light.
X2.... exactly what Uncl3 said. The search button is your friend.
Mark
Thank you! I remember reading that one a while back, but among all the posts of pictures of peoples joey mods and the posts of people asking how to do it and getting told "the search button is your friend", I couldn't find it.

Scooter: next time the ***** keep telling you that, Check your 'tude somewhere else and hit up Google. After all, the parrots do not owe you anything. Especially their time to use the search button and find you a thread! Lots of easy links. If you are even more creative, you can ask "how to open headlights in the oven" and get generic instructions for just about every car out there.
The oven really is the easy way to do it. It took me about 2 hours total do my car. (I had owned it less than 30 minutes at the time) Instead of metal tools, use stuff like plastic paint scrapers/etc. The metal will tear up the housing where one goes to pry it open. Use gloves, even thick rubber kitchen ones will help prevent you from burning your hands and getting the glue all over you. Keep in mind, rubber gloves WILL conduct heat and will burn you if they get too hot. I use some mechanics type gloves with rubber gloves over them.
This is a pretty decent guide, but not for an R56.

I'm sorry Brad Bedell, I wasn't trying to "have a 'tude", I just thought this was a community where people could ask people for help with things and get it. If this were an actual physical community and you came to my house and asked for help with something you couldn't find the solution to and I just said "YouTube" and shut the door, would that be helpful at all?
If you showed up at my house or at a gathering and I knew it was on the 'interweb or youtube' and I didn't know right off the top of my head, Yes! I'd tell you to search and offer you my computer. After-all, I don't carry pictures of all the modifications I've done in my life to a car around in my wallet. Someone would have to search and I'd be willing to bet none of the people in posts supra had the window open or easily bookmarked.

I am also a member of a few other forums that do not have these guidelines and on those forums trying to find an answer is about impossible. You mentioned having 249 threads show up under a search try searching on some of the other forums without a search requirement and you will find 24,900 (yes over 24 thousand) threads to look thru for answer. That is why this forum requests that people search and try to find an answer before posting. And if you do not find it them post a new thread or post to one that has similar issues so that others can find it easier.
But to be rude to the rest of the community is also not appreciated here, and will alienate people and they will stop answering you questions
I know its an older thread but since I didn't see the quick reply of the following, here it is for those who find this while searching.
Bake at 200F for 5-7 minutes and work the clips and pull the lens from the housing. If it doesn't come after a minute or two of gentle prying, back in the oven for 5 minutes.
Do not paint the reflector surface that the light is bounced off of, your crappy halogens will get way worse.

Sorry... this isn't the first thread I've seen where someone has asked for help and gotten a "search bar" answer, it's frustrating. I understand that no one here is required to help anyone, but then, why would anyone want to come here. Some how I've become the bad guy on this thread for getting frustrated for people not being helpful, so, whatever...

Maybe if you learned to actually use the search function. Like limit the search to a specific forum subsection like the HOW TO, or Exterior modifications, you would get better results.
As we engineers say, garbage in = garbage out...

Holy crap, seriously? Well, from one engineer to another, thanks for the garbage...
WTF man? Most morons on here say they "USED" the search function, when all they do is type "joey mod" into the main box. Of course you're going to get a billion hits. Maybe I should have said, learn to use the ADVANCED search function. And actually an advanced Google search is way better...
You guys think this is frustrating? Then you should try searching for information on Factory Navigation retrofitting... Or maybe factory heated seat retrofitting... I'd have been ecstatic with a search term that allowed me to narrow down my research.

Let's smooth this out...
Okay, I'm going crazy trying to figure out what's happened here, so I'm going to try and straighten it out and address your comments one at a time.
Brad:
I've already addressed knowing no one owes anyone anything, but I've been using a computer since Windows 3.1, I know how search tools and Google work, but, for some reason, I couldn't find what I was looking for. What I was looking for was that .pdf that guy attached.
You never answered my question, but I'm sure the answer it is yes. PLease read on before you go anywhere outside of me trying to fix whatever is going on here.
This pretty much states that you agree with me, besides letting me use your computer to search, but, schatzy62, that assumes I haven't followed Rule #3.
schatzy62:
You're right, #2 and #4 are on me, but, isn't assuming someone is stupid, or even lazy by not following rule #3, kind of an ________ thing to do? I'd rather assume people are capable and intelligent and help them if I can instead of assuming they're idiots incapable of helping themselves, which is my whole point. Also, I did what you said about making a new thread, and you hit me on it?
Yes, I did it, the instructions the guy sent were just EXACTLY what I was looking for and it turned out great.
Thanks, I already did it, and the instructions said 250F for 5 minutes, and it worked great. I made sure not to paint the reflectors.
As an engineer, you probably feel the same as me when people talk to you like your stupid, to you, I apologize.

I've been working on cars since about the time Winders came out. There's not much I've not done with them at this point. The only big thing left on my car-related bucket list is to design and build one from scratch. As for computers since about the TI-99.
The only question that I see above that I didn't answer was you asking if referring you to youtube was helpful. My answer is neither a yes or no. While I do share your frustration, I'd assume no one knew and go figure out the concept and then apply it to my current car.
The last time I did a set of headlights was in 2005, the first time was in 1997 on a 3000gt vr4. I've done 40-50 sets, most for customers in my past life. In September, I referred to the exact PDF I posted in my first response to get approx baking temp and time. Baking headlights isn't anything new, but the "engineer" in me needed to recall the exact time/temp.
My mis-interpreted, or potentially obfuscated point was that you were being way too specific for this task. Learn the concept, not the task. It can be applied to any car you own in the future.
I didn't know what the Joey Mod was until this thread. So, in a way your persistence taught me something. (my hard headed self searched through 600+ BMW and MINI threads to end up empty handed for my navigation retrofit)

p.s.
You worry too much. Message forums brings out the same agression as driving. For some reason, people forget that they are human.
