Interior/Exterior Are my seats prewired w/ heating elements?
Are my seats prewired w/ heating elements?
I have a 2002 MCS w/ sport seats. I looked under my seats and I have three connectors, yellow, blue and black. All of them have something plugged into them. If I understand correctly, the yellow is for the airbags, blue for the seatbelt tensioner, and black is supposed to be for the seat heater. If I have something plugged into the black already, what does that mean? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I dont know if they are wired with the heating elements or not, but maybe you can figure out what type of connectors are under there with a diagram? Heres one off of RealOEM:

Do you have the switch for the seats in your center console?

The yellow connector is for the airbag and the other two are for the seatbelt tensioner. If your seats had heating elements there would be an additional black connector with heavier gauge solid black wires.
I don't know for the 2002 model year but I know of several people with '06 MINI's that were prewired. They literally just replaced the mirror adjustment panel with one that had the seat heater controls. The extra plugs were taped into the loom right under the console.
No different than my car being prewired for the auto-dim mirror. Just bought one and replaced the one I had. Worked perfectly.
I would guess in later years it became more cost effective to go ahead and just include some parts in the harness. My car was also pre-wired for the alarm. Took me 30 minutes to install it.
I know of one person with an '06 that had the R56 (JCW brake size) installed on his car from the factory. The calipers were not red but looked normal but he has an insert in his owners manual to use JCW front brake pads and rotors.
I would think an earlier year would not be pre-wired for much. More cost effective in the early life of a model to add that option as ordered,. Once a model becomes a success, and in later production when the money has been made back, it becomes more cost effective to streamline the process. This is even more true on a vehicle that is heavily based on custom orders from customers and has a large number of different configurations.

05 prewired heated seats?
--I have an 05 S that was one of the last 10 MINIs to come off the production line for the year.
Has anyone seen 05 S with prewired heated seats?
Can someone with heated seats send a picture of their wiring under the seat? i have 4 wires under my seat.
Thanks everyone!

Like it states above, If you have a black connector with the heavier gauge wiring then you should have the pads in your seats. Sorry I don't have a picture, but it's hard to get under there to take one.
You will have one connector that is yellow for the airbag. Two that use some light gauge wiring for the set tensioner. If there's a fourth that black like I stated that's the seat heater.
It's hit or miss whether you have them or not. Seems they just used the seats with them if they ran out of the ones without them. My guess is more MINI's shipped with heated seats than not but I have not actual numbers to prove this. Just a hunch.
BTW, If you do go under there, and disconnect the connectors, DO NOT turn the key with the airbag one disconnected. You will throw a code that will require a service trip to the dealer and possibly money. I don't think think there s any way to reset it other than the dealer either.

I know its an old thread, I was digging around in my car for where those larger gauge wires lead to, not much luck, I didnt see a plug under the center panel (where the mirror adjustment is). though there are wires, matching the colors under the seats, couldnt pull them up, didnt want to break anything.
anybody have any luck with this? I'd love to just put in switches and have heated seats, my wife would be happier than ever to go on runs!

I'm very excited now I pick up my new 06 tonight. I wanted heated seats but it didn't work out. I'll check under the seat and let youknow what I see. Dealer said 1500 ish to add them because they had to redo the leather.
BUMP, found this http://motoringfile.com/howto/miniheatedseats.pdf so I have a 6/2006 production mcs without the heated seat/mirror switch plate. My seats are prewired.
Any idea to what direction to start looking for plugs taped in the center console wire loom? Also if anyone had their car pre wired, were the plugs from the loom to the seats visible or tucked under the carpet under the seats?

If you do a search on Google with the terms "North American Motoring, adding heated seats" you will pull up quite a few threads on the topic. See this thread, page 2 for a good picture of the wiring harness under the seats.

Also check out this members info about his retrofitting the seats to his car.

And finally, on a selfish note, if anyone has a mind to attempt the retrofit, I have a mirror/seat heater center switch which I am selling in the marketplace. I originally purchased it with the intent of retrofitting heated seats but have since sold my non heated seat MINI in favor of one that has heated seats so I no longer need it.

This shows the connector on the seat, I said I have that, so I obviously know what it looks like... thanks anyways

checked it out, retrofitting is different than me asking if anyone actually had the wires installed, but were tucked away...I was asking whether to look drivers, passenger, front, rear of shifter i guess. Also if the connectors from the wire loom were under the carpet under the seats or visible

I might hit you up for that if I find wires already installed in my car...Hunter99 claimed that there was a late 06 car that was completely prewired other than switch, THAT is info I am looking for.

To follow up, my car has the fuses that would indicate heated seat wiring installed. However, I pulled the fuse box out, and nothing for the heated seats was connected. I pulled the seats and carpet out today just to make sure nothing was taped back, and found nothing. So my 6/06 production space blue with blue/black heated element leather seats WAS NOT prewired for heated seat switch... just to add information for others looking.
