Starting my Plasti Dip Mods....Questions

I just went to home depot today to get some plasti dip spray. I did the gas cap and the air vent rings. I do have questions though. How do you get the headlight rings off (2003). I tried going around with a flat head screwdriver by the clips but i broke one, and now im scared to keep going at it. How do you get the side vents off(where it has an "S")? And lastly how do you take off the speedometer ring?

Did any one else do plasti dip on the interior other than the air-vent rings and the speedometer?

sorry for the bad quality pictures i had to take them with my iphone

As for the headlight rings. They are extremely hard to get off. What you have to do is just tape up the lens of the headlight with painters tape and spray the rings still attached. Problem solved. Good luck.

Oh, and take the lights out of the hood of course.

so i have to take the whole headlight out just to do the rings? Theres no way i could just pop out the rings safely without breaking them?

Nooooooooo! Take the headlight out. Three 10mm nuts ea side. And the washer squirter has a quick connect where the hose attaches. Lifting the head light assembly out, you have to carefully twist it some and tilt it some to get the whole thing out since the washer assembly is attached.

Best if removing the headlight ring that the assembly is warm, so bring it inside. Rings can be removed just have to be patient and carfull not to snap off tabs as they can be brittle.

New rings are 23.00 a side.

New headlight is 500.00 a side.

Once light is out, you can always just tape it up really good like the other poster said and start the PD process. You should be able get the job done w/o removing the rings.

TIPS:
Take your time. I did other projects while doing these parts.
Do not spray when item is in direct sunlight.
Use very light coats - allowing time between coats
If there is an edge to a surface you are painting, try to get some PD around that edge and around the back. It creates a better seal all the way around the edge to prevent peeling. For Door handles this is very important.

Oh, and to get the sidemarker grill off, open up the hood. Look down in the area behind the a panel. You'll see a little small pin. If you push on this, it'll pop the front part of the grill out. Then just slidenit forward and you'll see it was just clipped in. If you can't see the little pin, just reach your hand back there and feel for it.

^ That is how I ended up doing it, just take out the headlights, get some painters tape, tape it up, cut around the inside of the rings (between the rings and the lens) with an exacto knife. plasti dip them (i did four coats, heh)
Then before you start peeling run that exacto knife around again to make sure when you pull the tape off you wont pull off plasti dip.
Best thing is if you mess up, you can do it again.

i pasti-dipped down tubes and front bumper between my aero grills. it was easy and i like how reversible it is. plus it takes only a few minutes if i ever need to redo it. i did about 3 coats.
