I'd love to see a shot of a Black MINI with clear taillights. Thanks.

In the Members MINIs, but not a great shot:

In the picture that Bound4NW linked to, it's a black Mini with the clear tail lights. I can see the red reflectors in the bumper.

But in the pictures that are shown right here in the forum, the black Minis don't seem to have the red reflectors.

What's the story there? Was that just a non-dealer install without the red bumper reflectors?

I very much like the look of the clear tail lights, and I want to be legal and safe and have the red bumper reflectors.

But how do they attach to the bumper? Adhesive? Another poster made it sound like the factory or the dealer actually cuts into the bumper to make a special insert for the red reflectors.

I'd feel better if the factory did it.

Thanks for any help,
Dan

There are no reflectors on the examples above.

Dealer install or not, these owners did not add the required (in most states) red bumper reflectors by choice.
The reflector kit comes from the dealer and costs something like $40+ or so. You have to cut into the bumper in an oval and insert the indented red reflectors. In this next thread there is a hazy picture of one MINI that has it followed by several MINIs that have alternative lower grille mounted reflectors that are also OK.

Red rear reflectors are required in most states.

The factory never does it. Always after market and there are two kits, one for the aero bumper and one for the standard MC or MCS bumper. Both are the same price.

Thanks Minihune for the great info, as always. Your post clears it up for me. I actually like the look of the red bumper reflectors as installed by the dealer. I assume it's a clean looking install once your face is down right in front of it.

Now I'm back to scouring the NAM posts for making the upper rear fog light work as a brake light too, complete with a normal brake light with the lights on, a brighter brake light with the brake pressed, and some sort of rear fog light override when I flip the switch.

My Mini hasn't been born yet. I'm scheduled for a late Dec or early Jan build. Probably a March delivery.

Thanks again,
Dan

It is a clean install but there is cutting of the bumper to install it.

With the white tail lights there is a separate install kit that cost quite a bit that most of us omit. It provides for the rear lights to look more red than pink by adding some wires to correct the voltage. I heard that given the white tail lights the MINI rear fog light mod does not work. I have seen other owners with white tail lights do the NAM tail light mod to get the rear upper lights to go on with braking. Those same lights are off even with the headlights turned on so they are on only if the brake pedal is depressed.

Thanks again, Minihune.

I just got off the phone with my dealer. He said that he's not absolutely sure (he would have to double check), but it looks like that with white tail lamps, they can't do rear fogs, due to DOT restrictions.

With white tail lamps, they make it so when pressing the brake, both the top and bottom lights come on red. There is a red bulb in the top that shines red, although when it's not on, you don't see a red bulb in there.

He also said that when the lights are on but you're not pressing the brake, only the bottom light comes on, at low intensity.

All of this jibes exactly with what you just said in your post, so that's good.

I think this is going to change my order. I don't think I'll order the white tail lights with my MCS (and avoid the bumper cut for now), but I'll be looking at doing the white tail lamp mod afterwards. Also, I *will* be getting the rear fogs stock with my MCS, so I'll have that much set up and ready to go.

I doubt if this is legal, at least in California.
