To Anyone Worried About "Plasti-Dipping"

Just wanted to let everyone who's skeptical about blacking out their chrome, that Plasti-Dip really isn't a bad way to go. I know it's not as professional as vinyl or real paint, but it saves a ton of money, and it still looks pretty damn good. Between summer 2008 and summer 2009, I picked up 3 or 4 cans of it and painted everything on my car besides the beltline and door handles.

Then:

Now, a year and a half later, I decided to take it all off. Even though the car (IMO) looks goofy as hell now all split up, The PlastiDip came off without a problem. I had to use a little Mineral Spirits on the grille surrounds, but everything else just peeled off. The chrome is as good as new, and I think the PlastiDip may have even protected the chrome beneath.

Now:

So, if you're thinking about blacking out your chrome, but don't want to spend a ton of money doing it, or would like it to be reversible, PlastiDip is surely the way to go. I really wish I did my headlight "Joey Mod" in PlastiDip so I didn't have to buy new ones now!

I know I hate it haha. The car looks like a fish now. But, the car's gotta go soon so I figure I should put it back to stock.

I used it too to black out my MCS and after almost a year, it still look intact and perfect… Only the driver door handle is starting to show some signs of wear, might have to redo it next summer (if I don't replace the handles with carbon fiber ones).

I have plati-dip on mine just to play around with what I want to do with the chrome (body color or matte black). Gotta say the stuff is super easy to remove when you want to.

I like the look of the "all blacked out look". Where might one purchase this plasti-dip stuff?
Thanks!!

At any Lowe's/Home Depot. In the spray paint section. Cans usually run between $4-$6 a piece.

Thanks for this post..I was skeptical about how easy it may come off and that it doesn't leave any color hues on the chrome..

To the OP. Are you going to go back to the blacked out cat. It really looked nice and clean. And I have several pieces on my car Plasti Dipped. It works fine and looks good.

So, because I am still skeptical, I tried the plasti dip on a couple of things laying around the garage and I am wondering how it is "peeled off"? It seems to be on there pretty good and not thick enough to grab and peel.

I haven't tried mineral spirts. Im sure that works. I am just curious about the 'peeling'.

Any comments..

Same here, 3-4 coats with plenty of drying time in between. The stuff is durable too. During our recent "snowmageddon", I did manage to nick the plasti-dip on one headlight ring and one small spot on the upper grill surround. I'll fix that stuff up when the weather warms up again.

Good luck with it!

Yeah I figured it was more than one coat. I was going to buy some tonight when I was at Lowes but I decided I too was going to wait till the weather warmed up a bit.

Yeah, I'm going to go back to the all black as soon as the weather warms up. I bought the glossy Plasti-Dip instead of the matte this time I want to see if it looks better.

It peels off quite easily after you get it started. I just kind of rub my thumb back and forth over it until it starts to come off, then I grab it and peel. The pieces that had the Plasti-Dip on them for a while needed the Mineral Spirits to help it along.

I forgot I posted this, but I'm extremely indecisive when it comes to whether I'm selling my car or not. Some days I love it and some days I hate it. The countless rattles and trips to the dealer don't help. But, at this point I'm thinking I'm going to trade it in for a 2011 S in the fall, but who knows, tomorrow I could be thinking I'm going to trade it in for a WRX. I can't make up my mind!

But if I do sell it/trade it in, and need to buy new headlights, the Joey Modded headlights will be up in the marketplace for cheap. They're getting painted dark silver as soon as it gets a little warmer around here.

Remove them. All 4 rings are held on by clips. The grille surrounds and the boot handle have a few screws.

I'm not really sure what exactly it is, I guess it's closest to a paint thinner. But it won't screw up the chrome underneath, it'll just help you get the Plasti-Dip off. You can find it in any hardware store near the cleaning products for around 5 bucks.

another option to taking plastidip off is power-washing it.
get reallllly close to the painted part, point and shoot, comes off with no hassle at all
