Interior/Exterior 2 beltline blackout questions
It's very tough to get that front part done with out bubbles. It took me two tries. Maybe i just wasn't doing it right but it is tough. I'm happy with the 3M super +33 tape from home depot. The only thing i'm not 100% happy with is the end caps. I don't think there is anyway to get them to look stock. I'm going to get daring on tuesday if it is nice when i do my joey mod is mask off the entire car except for the beltline and hit it with PlastiDip. I figure it should take me close to 90 minutes to do the masking right. The nice thing about PlastiDip is if you don't like it it doesn't take much to get it off. i just did all the chrome on my car and didn't like the way one headlight ring came out so i just pulled it off and started over. I figure the beltline and joey mod should take the entire day but will be well worth the time and energy. I'll keep you and everyone posted on the beltline as i have not heard of anyone painting it this way. everyone seems to take it to a boddy shop.
being a surgeon i am pretty good a doing fine movements with both hands. unfortunately i also suffer from ocd. i took my time and when finished i stepped back and felt the looks were a definate improvement. BUT-- up close it still looked like tape. i am not a person who believes in the 5 foot rule so off with the tape. lyles product was high quality , cut perpectly, and was generous in amount , but i just did not care for the up close look. certainly a minute cost outlay and fun to do but just not my "cup of tea"
I know this thread is a few weeks old but i tried something new the other day. PlastiDip. It's my new best friend i have done all my chrome with it. I did the belt line on the hatch as a test spot. It came out really great. The ends look a lot cleaner. It does take some time to tape off the car so you don't get any on the body and when you peel it off take your time as well so it doesn't tear the PlastiDip. I will be doing the rest of the car sometime next week when there is more time now that i know it works.

Could you take some very detailed pictures when you tackle the rest of the beltline? Specifically where you're masking off? I've never used a spray can for anything detailed before, so I'm very nervous about doing this on my car.
