To Red Scoop or Not To Red Scoop

Okay, the previous owner replaced the original bonnet scoop of Dr Evil with a carbon fiber scoop. It's nice, but from more than a few feet away just looks like a dark gray or black scoop:

So... I'm giving serious consideration to replacing it with a scoop painted Chili Red. I think that would tie in nicely with the other red bits and pieces on him.

What do you think ?

I also have to get the approval of the co-owner, Ms. CR&PW&JB, but I'm pretty sure I can convince her.

If I go that route, anyone want a carbon fiber scoop ?

I think it would look good IF you lose the stripes.... it'll be too busy with the stripes IMHO.... and I think I know what your opinion is of nekked MINIs...

... but it's an easily reversible mod

I WOULD say "find a friend with a CR MCS nearby and spend 5 minutes doing the swap to test it"... but the hardware on the OEM scoop is crap... it's too easy to break the plastic holders for the hardware while trying to remove the nuts... ask me how I know...

You really think so, Paul ? Those red pins on the white stripes too much ? Hmmmmmmmm. I don't know.

By the way, I'm also about to make Dr Evil's boot nekkid again. I liked that look... no stripes and debadged. My other half liked the strips so I made a deal with her that I'd leave them on for a year. The year is up.

BTW, all, if I do this change, the carbon fiber scoop has been spoken for already.

I agree with Blimey, the red works on your car, but the scoop might be over the top. The CF looks a bit out of place because you don't have any other CF bits. My vote; body color scoop with some red pinstriping detail just around the opening. I think it would better match your car and add more to the theme without taking it too far.

That would look pretty sharp, Deviant, I agree.

By the way, there's some carbon fiber under the bonnet and the boot handle is also carbon fiber. But you're right, they don't connect because you can never see more than one carbon fiber part at a time.

It's actually the white stripes and the chrome grille that make it too busy, when you add the red scoop... I've been kinda down this path with more and more cosmetic features on the front of the car... and have spent the last year minimizing and consolidating some stuff to reduce the "busyness". I may end up losing my trademark stripes....

Yeah... the chrome and the driving lights does make it look busy up front. And I definitely don't want to lose the bonnet stripes.

So yeah, if anything, probably just the red pinstripe around a Jet Black scoop, same width as the pins on the stripes.

And hey, I could always violate the law and do away with the front plate. That would remove some of the busy-ness on the front.

What if you forget a red scoop and get all red stripes. That would definitely be original. And I think it would work well with everything else!

The *best look* would be to have Chili Red ghost stripes painted on using CR tinted clear coat.... that would be righteous... but it's non trivial and not easily reversible....

See... this is another reason Jet Black is a great color... it's like a blank canvas and you can do SO many things with it.

CR Ghost Stripes WOULD be righteous. Solid red ? A bit much, I think. But I like the unique ideas.

My opinion only but I think with your current set up, if you had a white scoop. That would be kind of cool and compliments your stripes. But if you had a red scoop, the stripes would be too close to it and would make the front too busy...

If you had a white side skirt stripe and a white hood scoop, it would look awesome.

BTW: How come one picture the license plate says DREEVL and the other one is different?

My 2 cents are that if you add a red scoop you might as well have the steering wheel squirt water at you since it will look like a clown car. I have been wrong before but hey its your car/cash.

Contrasting hood scoops sound cooler than they actually are - I wanted a chrome one until I looked at one in my rear view mirrors for an hour or two. It looked good from close up, but too busy from any distance at all. I do love the red bits with black look though - mine is black bits with BRG. I ended up putting a black John Cooper sig decal in my hood scoop. I could see some red bit in yours, but I don't think pinstriping is the answer. You do have a very good look going there.

White scoop... now THAT would be bold !

The plates... the one pic was taken before the personalized plate arrived.

That is exactly what I was thinking as I scrolled through the posts before this one.

first of all great car......lose the stripes, go body color on the bonnet. As mentioned previously, a small red strip within the bonnet. Red vinyl on your driving light covers, a red tow hook, paint the back calipers red to match the front, and then have your emblem centers, vinyled black with a red S,and continue that pattern on your four wheel centers. Subtle, but just a little red all throughout........

Thanks, appreciate the compliment.

The rear calipers are painted. You just can't see them in that pic.

And the four wheels, already have center caps... black and red UJ's.

I'd love to add a red tow hook on the front, but the same adapter is being used for the Platypus license plate holder.

Nope... not losing the bonnet stripes. Just like the earlier suggestion to lose the CR mirror caps... ain't happenin'.
