Doesn't fall into the category 'non-expensive' though.

I have this one. Mini Mania USA used to sell it, but now it's only available
from their UK site.

The MC is more of a short ram since it isn't sucking cold air out of the engine bay. I have a K&N Typhoon and like it a lot. I think you might be able to find a knock off on ebay.

I think this would work. And you could always get a better filter.

It's a little louder from 2K to 3.5K and near the redline, but that much
louder than stock. It is a true cold air intake, however.

I ordered the aFe because of the price, it looked like it really was an easy install, and (from what I read) it sounds stock until you get up to 3000rpms. There are lots of threads about CAIs on here and after reading almost all of them, I think the aFe sounded the best. I'm still waiting for it in the mail.

Here is my K&N CAI. Got it used off of NAM. I got a new filter at the same time. I have had it for a good six months now and I love it. The sound is worth it all. But it looks great and its supposed to give you better MPG, but I find myself giving it the beans so much for the sound that I noticed a significant drop in mpg.

Just so you know that is for the MCS, not the MC.

Aggies AFE is what you would want for an AFE intake. Plus, from what I've read the heat shield really help out. Although the stock intake hose is kept which might still restrict air flow a little.

It's too bad there isn't a hybrid between the AFE and K&N. I think I am going to try and make my own. I'll let you know if I ever do.

You're not gonna get "louder" per se with just an Intake. Now, get a DDM R50 intake and a Magnaflow exhaust? Beastly... Just plain beastly... Here's the Magnaflow alone: Drive By, and Horribly recorded stationary versions. It doesn't have that nasty raspy sound though, just a nice growl. I'm in the process of saving for the DDM (which after a lot of research and advice from my peeps has become the clear choice for my R50 for both sound and the slight power boost), but that'll come soon.

So yeah, there ya go.

Huh... Should work... Well, here's the direct "cut n' paste" versions. Couldn't figure out how to get rid of the linkage, so just cut and paste between the [/url] tags:
