Interior/Exterior TINT question (windows popped? door taken apart?)
TINT question (windows popped? door taken apart?)
Question to all you folks who have had your MINI's tinted.
I have had a honda civic and ford ranger in the past that I have gotten tinted.
Both vehicles where tinted at different shops. Both places pulled apart my doors to pop the windows to apply the TINT. and each time I had somewhat of a window issue afterwards. Each had been resolved. One had a rattling noise, other was the windows didnt roll b/c it came off the track.
since then, I have been against TINT. I DO NOT want idiots taking my MINI's door a part to apply TINT. So you folks that had it done, was this a problem? do they not need to do that anymore if at all...?
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks
Alex

No problem at all!!
I got my MINI window tinted about 3 weeks ago, but have never had any problem with windows. I went to 3M authorized applicator shop which gave me life-time warranty for any tint film problem. I don't think they took the window out to apply film. It sound very strange.
Anyway, good luck!!1

thats what I thought. The Civic and the ranger were done in 1999 and 2002 by different shops. I thought this was standard. I was told they took the door apart to get the tint film BELOW the rubber piece that runs along the window.
So I was thinking about TINTing again, but if they start pulling stuff apart, i would be pissed.
W/out pulling the door apart, how do they get the TINT below that rubber piece?

Are you guys sure about the door thing?
I just called a local tint shop and he said that it is standard to take the door apart to get the tint film about a 1/2 inch below the rubber trim. If you dont get it below that and cut it even, over time the film will peel off.
this place has lifetime warranty on the tint.. eg fading peeling etc..

The place I used uses a trim piece to push the rubber down they put the tint down to the pushed down rubber, when all done the rubber pops back up well above the tint.

250 including tax for the 3m film... had one issue though...
the minis front side windows move up and inch or so everytime you close the door... this assures that there isnt any annoying sounds and keeps it more airtight (i believe). regardless, the driver front side tints that i had had a fold and a few bubbles because of it. just something to keep and eye on when and if you get them done...
those pesky dot matrix on the rear sides makes the whole tint job such an eye sore! its like this light ring around the windows!

If anyone is in the San Antonio, TX area:
When I ordered my MINI a few weeks ago, they have a specialized tint man on site. He has been tinting their BMWs for twenty years, and MINIs since they arrived in the USA. $250 for lifetime warranty on any tinting issues. Look into it if you live nearby!

$ 210 including tax for Formula One Pinnacle. Life time warranty. I got all four side windows and the rear. My installer used a screw driver where the door latches and the window went into full up mode. When he was ready to shut the doors, he just hit the door opener on the inside and the window came down to the door opening/closing position.
There is no need to take the door apart. Any professional tinter cuts the tint (usually a machine does it first) on the outside of the windows first. Then it gets sprayed down outside and placed inside the car and squeegeed (yeah I turned that into a verb) and then the proper smaller squeegee pushed the tint down into the door panel. It's standard procedure and I would recommend 5% on the sunroofs.
Good luck with your decision!

Ist there a latch by the door when it manually pushes the window up? THey did that to my M3... they stick a screw driver by the door mechanism and it locks the window up.. then they apply the tint... and put it back down...
No issue whatsoever...

Being that this is my first post, I'm glad it has to do with my specialty.....
I'm a tinter and I can tell you that on a mini no panels are pulled at all. It's actually one of the easiest cars to tint. I only pull panels on cars with really tight seals (usually bmw, mb, and vw/audi). I know for a fact that most places don't even tell you that they pull the panels. Theres nothing wrong with pulling the panels, as long as the person doing it is experienced.
for mine they did stick a metal rod that kept the windows up. they also removed the grommet strip at the base of the window for mine. they just peeled it off...
i havnt had any problems cept of an occasional squeek on rainy days

hey people. I got my tints done from tint-king.net in CT. He did all windows minus sunroof and windshield for 170.00 USD. Also, it comes with a lifetime warranty. Fast service and immediate response. I was in out of there in lil over an hour. It came out wonderful. I feel paying anything over that is so much. Just my 2 cents.

they take it to a local shop so i have no clue how they will install it but i know its covered in the warrenty
