Aftermarket shift **** and problem w/boot

Hopefully someone can put me in the right direction with this problem as I have been trying to think of a solution to a problem I am having with an aftermarket shift **** I bought. So here's the story:

A couple of months ago, I bought a shift **** from Minspeed and absolutely love it (check my gallery for a couple of pics). The installation was quite easy because the **** does not twist on, rather it has a couple of screws that allow you to tighten the **** to nearly any shaft.

The problem is what to do with the shift boot. Because the stock **** wedged the boot between the **** and the plastic piece (can't think of anything else to describe it...), I now have no way to keep the boot to stay up. It just dangles. I've seen some shift **** adapters that seem to be low enough to keep the boot at a reasonable height. But, I don't know if my **** will fit the adapter (with it not being a twist ****) and I really don't want to lower my ****.

As a temporary solution, I went to the hardware store and bought some reusable puddy and have used that to artificially keep the boot up. But it is not consistent. It drives me insane. After a day's worth of use, it sags a little bit exposing its evil blueness. I am especially OCD with my cars when comes to interior installations, so I actually have trouble sleeping at night...

So, bottom line: is there any way I can get this boot to stay up that is going to be clean and consistent? Any thoughts are greatly, greatly appreciated.

Hardware stores like Lowe's have rubber grommets, like the pic below. Obviously, get the one that will have the tightest fitting for the shaft. One of the cars I use to own used something very similar to that to hold up the shift boot, and it was OEM. You can stack two together so they will be less likely to slip down.

Hmm, this **** must sit very high on the lever. With the Whalen adaptor that I use, I've never had a problem with the boot falling.

The rubber grommet should work, but you may have to take the console off to get them underneath the boot. If you need a taller boot, the leather shift boot from Redline is taller and will stand up higher on its own.

How to remove the console:

Hmmm... thanks a bunch with information guys. I will try and run down to the hardware store and try this grommet solution.

Your right, Robin, this **** does sit pretty high and I think that my destiny may line in an all new shift boot. Could be worse...

MPowerF1, there is another alternative; check out the MossMini site and go to the R56 performance parts section and you'll see a Shifter Insert part that gets rid of the boot altogether. I think it looks pretty cool and I'm definitely will get one as soon as I buy a short shift kit from Alta. Hope it helps

I had the same problem and then used some thick rubber electrical tape the kind that sticks to it's self on the shaft slid the boot over it and have had no problem.

Here's another answer. P/N LSC-10 is the one that you want.

I whipped up a sample piece this morning (didn't want to wait for an order to show up), just to see how well it will work.
It's perfect; solid as a rock, and takes about two minutes to install.

I'm going to order some of these tomorrow and offer them free with future R56 **** orders.
For those folks who don't want the hassle of ordering, I'll offer them at my cost plus postage.

Another option might be to remove the boot all together and get a Alta or Cravenspeed shifter like provofam said. Very clean look and you can use almost any *****, especially Doug's with the adapters both he and, in my case, Cravensped provided.

Only reason I say this is because I have seen and heard people drive themselves crazy trying to make something look factory again, when it actually may be easier to do it this way.

Just my .02 and if Doug has the solution, then that's great, but if your still not satisfied I would say go with Cravenspeed's setup, with the short shifter and shift well, granted its a bit pricey, its well worth it when you see the completed project.

Here's the thread I originally posted on this...

If you want something easy and fast you also just pop up the shift boot and put in a wire tie on the shifter and that will hold it also.

That might hold, but I don't believe there is a ledge there; I'm thinking that it could eventually slide down.
