Are R65 shift ***** interchangeable with R53 shift *****?

Just curious, do R56 shift ***** fit onto the stock R53 shifter? I saw the new JCW shift ****, and was curious if it would fit on an R53...

Anyone know for sure?

It all depends on the shaft size I believe...I would ask Doug @Whalen Although I am sure many others know as well

You might find some fitment issues. The length between the part that clips and the fork that keeps the **** from spining is different by about 1/2 an inch. So the R56 **** will clip, but it will not engage the fork, so it will spin freely.

I haven't tried it yet, but I'm thinking that a small "extension" would remedy the situation.

Give me a shout if you're interested, and I'll whip something up for you to try.

This extension works; it effecttively raises the anti-rotation slot by about 3/8" or so, to engage the key that's inside the ****.

I've made a couple of them from aluminum; it's a simple machining job.

Hey thanks. I have a factory JCW **** for sale in the classifieds and people keep asking if it will fit an R53.

What do you charge for the extension?

I don't believe I've sold one before; but I may have, and just forgotten.

I'd whip one up for $10.00 plus postage, I suppose.

That's great! I'll pass on the info, if you would be willing to do it. I'm sure there is a market for those. You should start selling them!

Sure; feel free! I'd be happy to whip one up; and while I'm at it, I'll make a few extras.

I'll see about having my website lady add those to my site; maybe they'll sell.

Thank you. I'm sure they will. With all the people with R56's putting on aftermarket shifters and *****, and all the people wanting to git rid of that BIG R53 ****. Seems like a great solution to me!

The R56 **** has an intergrated shift boot attaching point on the bottom of the ****. It sticks out past the plastic trim and will need to modded to fit an R53. Great picture of the assembly on Whalen's website. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgu...26tbs%3Disch:1
Not totally interchangable but doable.

That's true; the bottom section of the snap area has to be cut off.

Here's an R56 **** on an R53 lever.

One thing I noticed is that the snaps on this particular **** don't lock as tightly onto this particular shift lever as they probably should; the **** is easy to pull off.
I don't know how much of that is due to the fact that this shift lever has had hundreds of ***** attached to it, though.

Yep; I just measured the only two stock ***** that I have in the shop, and the R56 **** is larger in diameter than the R53 (by roughly .010").

Really? I stand corrected then. Maybe the one I saw was aftermarket then? It looked stock. I guess I just don't know what I'm talking about...

To me, the stitching on the R53 **** creates the illusion that it's slightly larger than the R56;which is smooth of course.
And the "dish" in the top of the R56 **** probably helps to create the illusion that the diameter of the **** is smaller.
Or maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, either.
These 7-day work weeks are taking their toll on my already-feeble mind.

They do pull off much easier!

Must have been an aftermarket. Diamaters are same, but the R53 is a sphere and the R56 is a...not so much.

Maybe I should just keep to my own section. I don't need to look like a fool in TWO areas of the forum!

I just purchased a JCW R56 shift **** with one of the aluminum extensions. While I'm anxiously awaiting its arrival, can someone tell me if it looks funny on the r53 boot?
