Are R65 shift knobs interchangeable with R53 shift knobs?

Just curious, do R56 shift knobs fit onto the stock R53 shifter? I saw the new JCW shift knob, and was curious if it would fit on an R53...

Anyone know for sure?

Wondering the exact same thing.

It all depends on the shaft size I believe...I would ask Doug @Whalen:nod: Although I am sure many others know as well:thumbsup:

You might find some fitment issues. The length between the part that clips and the fork that keeps the knob from spining is different by about 1/2 an inch. So the R56 knob will clip, but it will not engage the fork, so it will spin freely.

ChrisMCS04 02-26-2008 11:58 AM

Ahh, I thought that this could be the issue...

Oh well, thanks everyone.

I haven't tried it yet, but I'm thinking that a small "extension" would remedy the situation.

Give me a shout if you're interested, and I'll whip something up for you to try.

Anyone ever figure this out?

This extension works; it effecttively raises the anti-rotation slot by about 3/8" or so, to engage the key that's inside the knob.

I've made a couple of them from aluminum; it's a simple machining job.

Hey thanks. I have a factory JCW knob for sale in the classifieds and people keep asking if it will fit an R53.

What do you charge for the extension?

Doug W 03-07-2010 01:13 PM

I don't believe I've sold one before; but I may have, and just forgotten.

I'd whip one up for $10.00 plus postage, I suppose.

That's great! I'll pass on the info, if you would be willing to do it. I'm sure there is a market for those. You should start selling them!

Doug W 03-07-2010 01:22 PM

Sure; feel free! I'd be happy to whip one up; and while I'm at it, I'll make a few extras.

I'll see about having my website lady add those to my site; maybe they'll sell.

Thank you. I'm sure they will. With all the people with R56's putting on aftermarket shifters and knobs, and all the people wanting to git rid of that BIG R53 knob. Seems like a great solution to me!

miniconcarne 03-07-2010 01:37 PM

The R56 knob has an intergrated shift boot attaching point on the bottom of the knob. It sticks out past the plastic trim and will need to modded to fit an R53. Great picture of the assembly on Whalen's website. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgu...26tbs%3Disch:1
Not totally interchangable but doable.

BIG knob? If anything the R56 is bigger. Definatley feels bigger on the car.

That's true; the bottom section of the snap area has to be cut off.

Here's an R56 knob on an R53 lever.

One thing I noticed is that the snaps on this particular knob don't lock as tightly onto this particular shift lever as they probably should; the knob is easy to pull off.
I don't know how much of that is due to the fact that this shift lever has had hundreds of knobs attached to it, though.

Yep; I just measured the only two stock knobs that I have in the shop, and the R56 knob is larger in diameter than the R53 (by roughly .010").

Really? I stand corrected then. Maybe the one I saw was aftermarket then? It looked stock. I guess I just don't know what I'm talking about...

Doug W 03-07-2010 02:06 PM

To me, the stitching on the R53 knob creates the illusion that it's slightly larger than the R56;which is smooth of course.
And the "dish" in the top of the R56 knob probably helps to create the illusion that the diameter of the knob is smaller.
Or maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, either.
These 7-day work weeks are taking their toll on my already-feeble mind.

They do pull off much easier!

 Must have been an aftermarket. Diamaters are same, but the R53 is a sphere and the R56 is a...not so much.

Maybe I should just keep to my own section. I don't need to look like a fool in TWO areas of the forum!

No worries!

I don't know too much and I can prove it!

SooperSara 04-14-2012 07:55 PM

I just purchased a JCW R56 shift knob with one of the aluminum extensions. While I'm anxiously awaiting its arrival, can someone tell me if it looks funny on the r53 boot?
