I'm facing exactly that problem right now, myself.

I'm on the verge of a panic.

I just disassembled my center console and installed a piano black overlay on the speedo. It looks terrific with the black domed decal on my center stack. Basiclly only the tach has a white gauge face now, and everything else in the car is redwood red or piano black.

One not-so-little problem: after reinstalling the speedo needle... the speedo does not want to stay zeroed!!! I'll drive around and push the needle into place to match the digital readout. Stop and start a few times to make sure it stays that way. Then when I go park... a few minutes later the needle drops down below its normal just-slightly-below 0 MPH position... and WAY-down over the LED horizontal screen a bit. Start and drive off, and it's now 5-7MPH slow on the needle vs. the digital. Pull the needle off and reposition. Stop and shut down and it does the same thing a few minutes later.

Anyone know WTF is going on!?!

Please help!

It REALLY changes the entire look of the interior! Whatcha guys think??

Celia,
Those gauge overlays are a perfect match for your car!

How did your husband remove the clear fronts without removing the entire housing from the dash?
I'd love to do this mod, but <mini>'s photo is pretty scary looking!

Custom Colors......?

I'm interested in the the attached color scheme for my gauges. These pictures are from the recently released 'electric Mini'. Looks to me like dark- dark gray background with lightish orange numbers. Please let me know if it is do-able and cost and lead time.

thanks, Randall

We can do these gauges for ya! I can't tell from the pics, are they metallic or just straight gloss?

To change the gauge lighting to yellow, the LED's would need to be changed.

I swapped out the gauge lights on my BMW F650GS using LED bulbs from http://www.superbrightleds.com. (Excellent service from them, by the way.)

Does anyone know what LEDs to order to change the gauge lighting from the amber-ish red to blue?

I'm pretty sure that you need surface mount LED's (High flux).

Not sure if it's 3mm or 5mm.

Yikes!

Thanks for the info!

I'll pass on that one.

On the BMW bike, it was a simple wedge-base bulb swap.

Celia..................... I'd also be REALLY interested in knowing how your husband just removed the clear gauge cover faces to install the new layovers. That would be a HUGE time saver.

On zero-ing out that needle, that sounds like a bit of an issue. The distance that it falls after the fact, try installing the needle that much further ahead (if that makes sense) and maybe it may fall back into alignment. Otherwise, I have no suggestions for you on that one. I know that sometimes vinyl gets cut enough to slip it over the needle withotu having to remove it........... not sure about in this case.

Lyle, it would be awesome if you could do up a set of gray/black gauge overlays as hoopty has posted of the new electrical mini. i think that would make the interior of many minis look very sharp!

I've been playing with the idea of getting a Ferrari tach overlay made... Except a red version. What do you guys think that would run me?

Celia,

I think I'm like the fourth person to ask you. How did your husband get into the gauges without taking the whole dash apart?

Is there a way to get into the cover from the front?

I fitted my overlays today and am so pleased with the result. One thing though, the speedo needle seems to jerk slightly when the car is accelerating. Have I damaged the mechanism? Is there any ideas anyone can suggest to fix the problem?

What gauge faces did you use?? They look very good

I managed to get the needle off the tach but I will slit the gauge face plate to install the new ones! Do you have any issues with the needles dragging on the overlay???

Are these available for Canadian cars??? I'm not interested in the MPH with the KM on the inside, but just KM. If so, sign me up for gloss black with the chilli red numbers please.

UPDATE of this project:

I tried many different times to order the instrument faces from this company ( Tachoscheibe Tachofolie Tacho Folie Scheibe Meilen Km/h Mini R55 Umskaliert von MPH zu KMH ) and even though they advertise that they take PayPal it appears that in reality they do not. Their ability to communicate in English is virtually non-existent. When the copies of of the PayPal emails to me were presented to them they claimed they were fake. I spent a considerable amount of time on the Phone with PayPal and they say that these people are not a "Registered" site.

Steer well clear of these scammers!

I am now searching for another provider of instrument faces...
