New Whalen Shift Machine

I have had a plain polished shift machine for about two years and decided to get one of Doug's works of art.

I sent him this little devil and he did an amazing job putting it on one of his shift machines.

Thanks Doug!

Last year I gutted my down stairs and made a new office, bathroom and lounge type area w/ 800 sq ft of tile. So I needed something to fill space and decided a Pub Table would fit nicely

I can see the wood work on the chair matches the table. Very nice.

Doug was totally awesome to work with. He's completely honest about what he can and cannot do, and very communicative throughout the development process. Doug is a good "go to" if you're looking for custom shift *****.

I sent Doug an email with a jpg of what I wanted that I found out on the web. I only sent it as an idea of what I was looking for - basically just to show him my idea. Within a day he had sent me a cad drawing of how it would look - and it was exactly the pic I had sent him! Amazing!!

In less than a week after I had sent him my original email, my new Whalen **** was in my car!

IMHO he is the best of the best - worth every penny!

Very cool.

I agree that Doug is very good at what he does. I was a production machinist for about 3 years when I was young and can really appreciate his work.

I've always beem impressed by his work -- but it's especially cool to see a finished product next to the original design idea . . . and to see how well Doug makes the transformation.
Thanks - Mini-RI

Wow, those are some nice *****, you *****! How does the size of the Whalen compare to the standard R56 ****? Smaller I'm assuming, but how much?

I feel like I should be annoyed by the giant size and annoying top ridge of the OEM ****, but I'm not. Plus I do like the way it looks. Still, I'd love to have a Whalen with Boris on it.

I'm thinking I'd like to see/feel one in person before I commit though.

As you mentioned, its smaller. I'm not sure by how much, but Doug has the measurements of his ****, the OEM ****, and a pool ball in another "Show us your shift ****" thread. It took me about a week or two before I got used to it w/o noticing the difference in feeling.

A stock R56 **** measures 2 3/16" diameter, while the stainless ***** that I use are exactly 2.0".

Can anyone explain exactly what the benefit of this mod is (besides looks)? It's true, everyone swears by this as an essential upgrade; but in concrete terms, how does it actually improve upon a stock setup?

Thanks in advance-

J

I love my no.14. People ask why 14 and I always tell them its green and white to match my car.

For me, the **** being smaller helps me shift faster, because I have small hands (better grip). Plus, the looks and the feel are MUCH better than the stock ****. The best way I can try to describe it is...the stock **** "clanks" into place in the gates, while the Whalen just "glides" into the gates.

Thanks people. Is it the weight that actually makes the difference? Or is it primarily the size?
Also, I just ordered a set from Robin Casady and was wondering if I could expect similar results. My guess is that if it's the weight that makes the difference, it won't be the same. Any thoughts?

I think that your cocobolo **** is going to be a little heavier than stock, but not nearly as heavy as Doug's solid stainless steel. I use Doug's adaptor, so there is some brass and stainless steel, plus the cocobolo is a fairly heavy wood. The appeal of wood is in the feel, thermal properties, and looks.

Oh, and I agree with everyone, Doug is a great guy to deal with.

I can't answer your question about whether a heavy **** makes for a smoother shift. I don't know.
