New Wheel

2007 season was not kind to the Momo Steering wheel. Covered in suede it just did not hold up to long drives and multiple track days. The nap is gone and various cleanings did not deem to help. Have to find out how to care for this oft touched item.

The suede is peeling at the bottom of the wheel and it's lost it's grip. It's really only been used for about 15K miles.

The new replacement. Hope it holds up better.

If the sparco gives you the same problem you might have to look into leather wrapped. Best of luck with the new wheel.

Very nice! Does it require a special way to mount it up to the steering column, or is it just a basic swap? Again, very nice!

Looks really cool, but I think airbags outweigh looks for a street car.

I thought those racing steering wheels are not made for durability beyond a single season, and they are ment to be used with racing gloves, right?

Wheel

What all was involved in mounting the wheel, other than just removing the stock unit? I assume there is an adapter hub to mount to the Mini shaft to mount the Sparco wheel. If thats true, does that move the wheel closer to you/driver? Also, sorry if off topic, but i'm interested in what appears to be A pillar mounted gauges,if so, where did you get the A pillar?Or are they universal pillar mounts that are mounted to the stock pillar, can't tell from pic.Sorry for all the questions,i just like you setup.
Thanks,
Bill

I like what you did with the cruise control. That idea makes me reconsider upgrading my wheel.

to those asking gnat all sorts of questions. He has documented pretty much everything he has done to his car. You can find it by using the search function.

The wheel does require a hub adapter and that needs to be modded to fit as there is no direct one for a Mini at this point. Search "momo hub 2008" for the thread on that.

For the pillar use the advanced search with the terms "gauge pillar" and find all posts by username, slot gnatster in the box.

Nice Job!
+1 on the Cruise control relocation.
Just curious what gauges you are running?
I'm planning on adding a A-Pillar Gauge pod soon, want to add the Oil Pressure/Temp Gauges.
After January, having gotten the Helix (Jan) Tune.
I think it would be a good idea.

Nice work, I plan on getting the oil cooler from mini madness that has the setrab, it comes with the plate that has the connections to tap into.

Cant wait.

What on the horizon for your next mod, your setting a high standard!
Thanks for the paint tip....my headlights are almost done.!

I, too, am interested in knowing what you're doing with the old wheel... My track-car-to-be needs a new steering wheel.

Ok, the old wheel is for sale. It's a Momo, 330mm. It's the wheel only, no hub, no horn button. New they run about $170. First reasonable offer gets it.

Wheel

Thanks Gnatster for the info, looks like relocating the cruise will be the only stickler for me,also i have the mfsw that i never use the radio controls anyway.Without the airbag, what happens at inspection time, you just swap wheels then swap back afterwards?
Thanks,
Bill
