Interior/Exterior Color-Shifting painted Minis
Color-Shifting painted Minis
The wife wants her mini to look like the '96 and '04 Mustang SVT Cobras. I am looking for anyone who has used a colorshifting paint as the body color for their mini, how they liked it, and any pictures. Any information on approximate cost would be useful as well.
Not the GP!

There are those of us who would think purple color shift... barf... Lambo doors, nifty... I only reply to add some balance.
To each their own. It's YOUR MINI, Youification.
Anything you do will be called barf and rice by some and loved by others. Make yourself happy and the heck with the world.
I've not heard a actual number qoute, only generic descriptions of that type of paint being 'high' cost.

I just ordered my Mini to somewhat match the hubby's Shelby Cobra (see pic below) I've reserved the personalized plate SHLBY JR.
Those doors have to go! Hubby works on car interior in lots and jokes those doors all the time. He says they ruin most cars. The door never seals the same again.

I've never had to really worry about others parking too close to me with all our others trucks and Jeep. The side step tube thingies (Nerf Bars) that run the length of the doors was nice. People would slam their doors into those only taking paint off their doors, not ours.
Life has change over the past year.
We are now back to owning cars, and nice ones that we don't
want banged up. Now I'm really bad about this worry.
I joked with the hubby about having the only Mini with the Nerf bar set up.
Oh why oh why did I have to click that link! Now I want to paint Cecilia!

But not that pastelish color. I want a darker color changing paint.
Hum...mod money, paint money..... Going to have to get another job!!

I just read that some of these paint jobs are as much as $17,500. might as well just save a little more and get another mini in a different color.

Interesting color... definitely a head-turner. if you don't like it, don't do it - simple.
As for the lambo doors, I've always liked them, and plan to add them to my car (the 2006 cabrio, not the classic) once I'm out of warranty in a few years. LSD Doors (http://www.lsd-solutions.com/indexlsd.html) is generally considered to be THE best solution for this type of thing - their product does not require you to replace the bonnet hinges, are crash-test certified (in Europe), and allow you to open the door outwards far enough to exit the vehicle without having to swing the door up if you don't want - this is also crucial for us MINI owners, seeing as how we need the door to open out before up with our retracting window glass. Other manufacturers make lambo hinges, but this seems like one of those cases where spending the extra money really will result in a better, safer and longer-lasting product.
I just like lambo doors because it's one of those mods that's 100% invisible until you decide to show it, then when you do, it's very striking. Most of my mods (undercarriage lighting, interior lighing, engine bay lighting, etc.) fall into this same category...

If you want it done right, it will cost alot, cause they have to take the entire body apart. That's why it costs so much. Still, never going to be able to do it. But it sill will be a dream to have it done....One of those left over childhood facinations with the oily stickers that colorchanged
But not going to pay 15-17K for it.

Now if you could get a lambo-type hinge that would allow Fiona to "fold out" of Nano's boot - THAT would be cool...
I was always impressed with Ford for doing this, and especially on such cheap cars as Escorts, Contours and Taurus, but I always wondered how the guys in the body shops felt about trying to match it when fixing an adjacent panel like a door or a fender - must be a beech to match...........and touch up? fugedaboutit!
Hi Dave, former Ford body guy here.....
If you are speaking of some of the high-pearl colors (Sunrise come to mind), yes they were a total PITA to work with. Ford also had a couple of color-shift versions available, and surprisingly they were very easy to work with. Since the color looks different at different angles, there is no problem matching adjacent panels, since they don't match from the factory any way. The only problem we had with them at the time was getting the paint from Ford. It was a proprietary formula and Ford didn't want just any yahoo repainting their hooptie with their "special" paint.
