There are different ways..I have film on mine, but you can also spray them. I got my film from www.mossmini.com but it's the same thing as www.lamin-x.com. Works well....but it was a pain to install for me and I messed it up.

i am planning to pull mine out and send them to:
www.tintedtails.com
for a light application of tint. i intend to have them mask out the reverse light circle. before doing so, i am going to crack the case and remove the chrome edge and reassemble.

i am considering buying a new set of rear tails and sending them off and that way i am not out of car to drive for a week while then lens are at tintedtails. then i will sell the original assemblies to someone else on the board who is interested to do the same. and so on, and so on ....

anyone else interested to participate?

I think they call it a tramp stamp, or do you mean tail lights?

I used the Lamin-X stuff on my tails. It's been on for about 8 months now and it looks great still - not too dark but certainly dark enough to show that they're tinted:

Mine came from Outmotoring.com and took about 45 minutes to apply and I did it myself. They're removable (unlike spraying) if you ever want to return to stock to sell the car or something. The film comes with an installation tool - you supply the soapy water, towel and hair-dryer (if needed to soften the film - I didn't use one).

for the record i've do a lot of touge driving with my other mini friends... and I find those tinted tails to me quite dangerous. They most definitely make the car hard to see and we already drive a small fairly transparant vehicle.

you get in line... find a curvey road, set a distance in car lengths and you maintain that distance. Swap leaders and rinse repeat.

They make seeing the brake lights very difficult. Most drivers only look for brake lights in the common locations. I just think they are a very bad idea. This comes from years trying to get people to see me on a motorcycle. People look right through you and getting rear ended in a hatch back is a horrible experience. don't ask me how i know.

Thansk for the help! Does Lamin-X cover the third brake light? Or is it strictly headlights and taillights (not something as small as the third brakelight) That's what I'm curious about!

No, just the tail lights, head lights, and side reflector lights....I don't believe they make the 3rd brake light film....

And I'd not cover it even if they did... The LEDs are pretty subtle anyway, and I'd leave them alone for max visibility.

I also have the Lamin-x Tinted Tails... I believe I have the SMOKE ones as apposed to the Charcoal. From lamin-x's website, the smoke allows 80% of the light output. The light output is more than enough.

if you use NiteShades, you can remove it with some metalizer thinner.
without damaging the lens. at least it worked on my old prelude's front
turn signal lenses (plastic)

I have used the film that needs to be heated to strech.

Oracal 8300

Use Dark grey, Middle grey, even red

Usually use middle grey on the headlights and the dark OR middle on brake lights, 3rd brake light, side markers in fender, repeaters, front blinkers, reverse lights ..ANY light can be done

for info please PM

here is the RED on a Chilli Red ... it really matches and gets rid of the chrome & is still RED
(for the Polizi to be happy)

Here is DARK on tails & reverse

middle on headlights & dark on blinkers

How did you mess it up? It looks easy to install, theoretically, especially on the relatively constant surface of the MINI.

You could always buy some of their bulk film and cut it to fit. You would want to sand down the raised lettering on the lens first. I wanted to do this because I have a black roof and the red lens just kind of sticks out.

I messed the corner's up because I just could not get the film to lay down around the edges....it was a long and rather annoying process. I finally gave up and just cut the film in sections with a knife and overlapped them. It looks good from far away, but like crap up close. I eventually wanted to get nightshades done....but I don't have the money nor the desire to spend the money.

Mine wasn't adhering on the corners either so I wrapped my installation spatula/squeegie thing with a rag and stuffed it into the crack - it held down the corner until the water evaporated a bit and the glue could grab hold. A few plastic spoons or knives pilfered from a McDonald's would have done the same thing - I wouldn't even bother unwrapping them form the plastic.
