Getting that !#% shift **** off

I'm sure this has already been addressed, but all my searching has come up with references to how the R53 **** just pops off with a little elbow grease. I've tried doing the same thing with my R56, and while I can feel the **** itself come off the shift stick, its still attached to the boot. Do I just have to keep pulling and all will be well? It just feels like the stiching in the leather will break if I keep forcing it . Has anybody else changed the **** on their '07?

Perhaps this will help.

The boot is held onto the **** by a plastic flange. My MA removed mine with one swift strong motion. Here is a photo of the removed **** (upsidedown).

just pull straight up. I know that sounds patronizing but it is that simple
