Interior/Exterior Door Lock Issue/ Won't unlock from handle
Door Lock Issue/ Won't unlock from handle
OK
Well I have searched the forums as best I could and have not come up with a solution for my problem.

Problem: While inside the car with the doors locked. Usually you pull the interior handle once to unlock the door and pull it a second time to open the door. Mine will not unlock the door. You can either hit the switch to unlock the doors and then you can open the door. So this means that it is a mechanical failure within the door. (this is drivers side door)
From what I understand this is a common issue. It happened to my passenger side door at about 10k.
The dealer said it could cost me between 100-350 bux!! And I am out of warranty @54K
Ok, so I have taken off the door panel and I have located the problem.
(This is where I need some help from someone who has done this before)
The problem is this orange piece (if you have done this before you will hopefully know what I am talking about) Basically this orange piece that is on the end of the cable has a spot where it clips, and it keeps popping out of this spot. From a mechanical standpoint this is the reason why my door will not unlock from just pulling the handle.
If I push the orange piece back into the spot where it is supposed to be, the door will unlock and open like it should. But the orange piece pops out the first time I do it.
My ? is how do I get that orange piece to stay in the spot that it is supposed to be in?
I know that "orange piece" and "the spot" are not too good of an explanation, but I don't know any other way to explain it.
My hope is that either someone that has done this before or a mini mechanic can shed some light on the subject.
My mini is sitting at home with no door panel and waiting to be put back together. Any information would be useful.
The only solution I can think of is to glue the orange piece in there, but I don't want to have a problem later.

I had this problem and it just became worse. I had the locking module on the driver door replaced. The part is about $100 and is pretty big, its a PITA to get to but takes about an hour. Now everything works perfect.

door latch cable
Dinger. Get some feltstrip tape. I think 3 m makes it,its kind of thick. Put the cable back in its hold. them apply the tape to it. What happens here is the
notches that the cable locks intop wears out. the fix is really to to replace
the complete door latch. As one forum person said. its a ***** to do.
As a factory Mini tech. its a PITA for me. If you want to save some $
Do the Felt strip tape think. Should hold up ok.
Guido.
