"Suspect arrested driving stolen Mini Cooper
A 29-year-old man was arrested in Kailua early yesterday morning after he was caught driving a Mini Cooper that had been reported stolen.
Police said an officer was monitoring traffic near the intersection of Kamehameha and Pali highways about 12:25 a.m. when he saw a Mini Cooper speed past on Kamehameha Highway.
The officer called in the license plate number and learned a 24-year-old woman had reported the car stolen.
The officer followed the car and saw it stop on Ulunahele Street in the Pohakupu area of Kailua. The occupants of the car took off running but the officer was able to catch up and detain the driver at the corner of Uluoa and Ulumu streets, police said. The driver was arrested on suspicion of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle. "

From what I understand you can purchase little machines to re-code keys or something like that. ...assuming they had a key. Hopefully the woman didn't leave her keys in it!

The only reported cases of stolen MINIs, and this has been asked many times, is when they leave the keys in the car (like the valet key in the GB) or its been towed away. It would be interesting to know how the thief stole this car.

hmmm, sounds like it might have been a spare key? stashed somewhere under the car or left in the MINI? but i recalled that these things are just dead weight once the key is removed (that was what sold me the car amongs the other wonderful things). i wonder if this person is part of the MINI club, maybe we can get more details...

it should be a felony
Stealing a MINI should get the maximum jail time. 2 to 3 years. If you wreck someone elses MINI it should be the DEATH penalty!

'Course maybe it was a domestic issue, and gf decided the best way to get back at an errant beau was to send the boys in blue after him. "stolen" vehicles often belong to those known and of confidence to the victim who have access to the keys, and perhaps even limited permission to use the car. Gotta get the indictment for further detail.
