Can we get MINI oil filters anywhere on island besides the dealership?

Or, do we have to order them on-line?

And does the S need a different filter than than the Cooper?

Just checked Lucy's oil this morning, and she was way low (yes, it was the first time I'd checked it since I bought her ... please don't flame me! I know I should have checked before now.) Took her to an oil change place in Wahiawa, but they couldn't do the oil change because they didn't have a MINI filter, and neither did the parts stores that they called. They were nice enough to top off the oil for me and vacuum out the interior at no charge, though.

Mahalo,

http://www.rspeed.com actually sells the kit, includes oil, filter, o-ring, funnel, gloves.

Or, you could go to the dealer. I think the price on the kit from them was like 35.

Search EBay for the filters. There are people that sell factory BMW filters in bulk or for @ $5 a piece. I'm sure they have the MCS filter, too.

have you had your 10k mile service yet? if not, you should be able to take your car in for a warrantly oil change or topping of fluids as the levels should not be dropping.

also, do you know what kind of oil the wahiawa shop topped with? synthetic?

It is common for oil to be low as early as 2000 miles.
Mine was one half quart low at about 2000-2500 miles.
I added another half quart at about 4500 miles and did an oil and filter change at about 6000 miles.
Dealer oil change at 10,200 miles.
I always fill up the oil with the identical oil as used from the last oil change.
For the MINI that would be Castrol Syntec (full synthetic) grade 5W-30 when done by the dealer.

You should check oil about once a month or everyother gas fill up especially on older cars.

I requested synthetic oil, so hopefully that is what they put in. The two service guys I talked to really liked Lucy, so I don't think they put regular oil in. It never occurred to me to go to the dealer though, and treat this as a warranty issue. The oil was very low and the engine needed more immediately, and I also didn't have time yesterday morning to figure out how to put oil in myself (please do not tell me how easy it is and I could have taught myself in a few minutes! I have no mechanical background so it is not that simple). I just hope the engine is okay, since I have no idea how long it's been running on so little oil. One of the things on my to-do list is to learn how to do an oil change myself. And I will definitely be checking it more often!

Thanks for the link, Beastmaster, I'll check it out.

low on oil nobody has owned a MINI long enough that this would not be a warrenty issue.Unless you did some mod to the car to void it

How low was the oil? Check your receipt to see how many quarts they put in your car, what type and what weight.

If it was 1 quart low, that's not too bad. If it was two or more, I'd be worried depending on the amount of miles that's on the car.

They did not charge me, so I had no receipt. I should have asked them how much oil they put in, but I forgot. I originally requested a synthetic oil change, so I hope that is what they put in.

You know the little long squarish thingy at the end of the dipstick (that I assume is the low oil indicator)? The oil level was halfway on that little squarish piece. Mileage is around 7000.

Then you were probably down 1/2 qt after 7k. That's not too bad.
