Sorry for this off-topic question, but what kind of connection speeds do you guys have? I just got Verizon DSL because of the price but I keep hearing that the Roadrunner connections are faster. I am continually seeing (all day long) of about 1250 kbps (downstream throughput) on http://speedtest.oceanic.com/.

Thanks for the input/information.

so...what does that exactly mean? the higher the #, the faster? i'm currently on rr, but at >$43/month, i 'm highly considering the verizon dsl, which is $35/month. but a patient of mine, who works oceanic cable, said that the main problem is you gotta install yourself and that these poor folks who have troubles end up calling oceanic to help them install it. but once it's in, i guess you save near $10/month.

but my question is...is rr and dsl comparable in speed? or is the difference, if any, negligible?

$10/month more in my pocket is like 2 plate lunches/month more in my stomach.

This was actually a topic of discussion in my office (I work in information technology for a company that owns several local hospitals) yesterday. I could bore you with details and all of the scientific tests the engineers ran....but I won't....the bottom line is, Road Runner is faster. We got all of our MD's and Executives hooked up on RR at home because it was the closest thing we could get them on that simulated our T1-type connection speed in the office.

DSL will be coming out with dedicated "lines" making service faster, but it will be like two to three times more expensive (from what I hear from someone in my office who's looking forward to getting that).

One of the things that you need to consider when asking a group of people about their connection speed is the area they live. People who live in densly populated areas may experience slower connection speeds because I think they are all routed to 1 switch and router in their specific area.

I'll try to see if I can find the actual #'s from the discussion the engineers were having in my office and share them tomorrow.

Here's my results - I live in Moiliili and am on RR. I'm also using a eMAC G4
Kilobits/Sec : 3583.2
KiloBytes/Sec : 439.1

Mine is running at 1218 kbps right now but it slows down to 500 - 700 when it's busy.

Good question! My parents have DSL & it's solid. I've got RR & it's gold, baby. The difference: insignificant, I'd say (well, 10.00 -- an extra couple of Jamba Juices per month). Will say this though (this is so obvious): both far outdistance dial-up. Actually, I can't stand to use slow computers ...won't. Me spoiled or what ?! As far as numbers go, no clue

That's the thing I was worried about. Beast, do you have RR too? In Southern California cable had the super speeds you guys are getting, however, when the lines bogged down they were under 1000. I had DSL in CALI also and like here I had the same speed 24/7.

I had to go with DSL because I could not wait for the cable guys to come out (had to do some work related things). Also, I am getting DSL for $29.95/mo.

Thanks for the information guys/gals. You guys are getting some astronomical numbers!

Each connection speed will vary from day to day and from the time of day and traffic on the net and on the trunk that your local cable connection is tied to.

Your results may vary widely. Using a router and multiple computers may also add lag.

It is midday and my current Cable speed is:
Kilobits/Sec : 1406.5
KiloBytes/Sec : 172.4

It's been running that speed all morning. Nothing great. One other computer is running an online game right now on my router.

At 1pm I have-

Kilobits/Sec : 1680.6
KiloBytes/Sec : 206

Take a look at these blazing speeds in the early morning hours:

Current Throughput
Kilobits/Sec : 35.8
KiloBytes/Sec : 4.4

Current Throughput
Kilobits/Sec : 89.1
KiloBytes/Sec : 10.9

The results of any test may vary with conditions and the test itself.

>>It is midday and my current Cable speed is:
>>Kilobits/Sec : 1406.5

When I run http://speedtest.oceanic.com/
Using my old 1997 Mac and 10Base T ethernet on a LAN Sunday 11am I get:
Kilobits/Sec : 1262.3
KiloBytes/Sec : 154.7
Par for the course at that heavy use time. It's Easter today.

My old Toshiba laptop 300 Mhz MMX with Windows 98 and 100 BaseT ethernet I get
Kilobits/Sec : 2078
KiloBytes/Sec : 254

Using a older Imac G4 (manapua) 700 Mhz with OSX and airport (802.11b)wireless network I get:
Kilobits/Sec : 70677.2
KiloBytes/Sec : 8661.4
That seems too fast cause it's off the chart.

And using a modern Imac G4 1.25 Ghz with airport extreme (802.11g)wireless network I get:
Kilobits/Sec : 1138092.3
KiloBytes/Sec : 16923.1
Which would be so fast I would burn my fingers on the keyboard if it were true.

If we use another website (not oceanic) to test speed like:
http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest

Then we get
Using my old 1997 Mac and 10Base T ethernet on a LAN Sunday 11am I get:
Communication- 1.2 megabits/sec
Storage 149.5 kilobytes/sec
1 MB file download 6.9 sec
Rating Good

Using a older Imac G4 (manapua) 700 Mhz with OSX and airport wireless network I get:
Communication- 1.4 megabits/sec
Storage 165.9 kilobytes/sec
1 MB file download 6.2 sec

HI-tech will powdercoat in nice candy colors if you want. You'd be surprised, their selection is pretty big. I was thinking of going with purple/orange 5-Star wheels....would look nice on my Cosmos Black, eh?

Hi-Tech Coatings is out at Campbell Industrial. I think they're the only ones who do powdercoating on Oahu. I've contacted them in the past to do some work and it costs about $60/wheel....and you need to remove the tire before you take it in. Turn around is about 1 week.

I'm trying to think what might work with R90s considering they are two piece and have lots of spokes and bolts/nuts.
Gloss black powercoat with silver bolts and silver lip.
Gloss black powercoat with white bolts and white lip.
Indiblue powercoat with silver bolts and white lip.
Indiblue powercoat with silver bolts and silver lip.
White powercoat with silver bolts and indiblue lip.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to go drive out there.

no problem....please do share with me your experience if you do go out there. I never actually went to their place (just spoke to them on the phone), but my motorcycle friends have had powerder coating done by them in the past, and said they have a wide variety of colors to choose from. I wouldn't mind powdercoating my 5-stars black just for the hell of it since they pretty much look black already, but I don't have spare wheels to use while they are at the powder coaters. Anyone wanna loan me for a week

Do you want to roll around on R90s for a week? Don't smash them into any curbs or potholes if possible.
And for an MC they are not the most lightweight wheels.

ooh yeah, that would be cool, beastmaster. Ok...now I just gotta find the time, maybe in the next couple of weeks? I'll let you know. Thanks so much!

minihune, thanks for the offer to borrow your R90s....V Spokes are more my speed. I might fall in love with your R90's, never give them back and run away to mexico with them.

sorry for thread jacking.....
