runflat repair in hawaii?
Well it happened. Much to my dispair, I had a flat. After speaking with MINI of Hawaii I was informed that they do not repair runflats. Not only that, but no one else on island will either. They are happy to sell one to me for the low low price of just $300.00 I know i cannot be the first here in hawaii, So here is my question.
Has anyone out there had a runflat repaired on island?
If so Where?
thanks

Sorry to hear about the runflat.
Several options for solutions.
Repair the runflat-check with costco or Samsclub- as a member they will offer flat repair. Lex brodie has done my repairs in the past except on side wall punctures.
Buy a used one- this is an option if we cannot find another solution for you. Several of us have extra sets of wheels with runflats.
Buy a new one-too expensive. $300 retail, $196 via mainland outlet.

You could also repair it yourself with those plug kits from the local auto stores. It's actually pretty easy as you need to use a rasp to clean out the puncture area. Then you insert the cord with the sealant into the hole and snip to the correct length. The better solution is to have a shop take the tire off the rim and patch the tire from the inside.
Thanks everyone for your input. Took the tire to Lex Brodie on Queen street on Friday. They pulled the tire for repair, However although the hole could have been repaired, the two 6-8 long cracks inside the tire (Presumably from running flat) were not repairable. So I contacted Alex at the tire rack and ordered 4 new non runflat Yoke es 100s should be here on Wed. Meantime no MINI.
Thanks again
Thanks again
Well pc will not have to be crippled with a flat tire much longer. I contacted him and will supply him with a working S-lyte wheel with inflated runflat tire to match his set until further notice. Kinda hard to drive to get your new tires mounted on your rims when one isn't working to get you there and there is no spare on board.
Costco would be an ideal place to do the mounting and balancing for around $9 per tire and thereafter provide the rotations and balancing for the life of the Yokohama ES 100s.
Nice tire upgrade from the runflats and cost about $400 compared to $300 for one new runflat. What were they thinking?
Keep those left over runflats as spares for us. If you have no space to store them then see me. The Minilani parts center. I almost have enough to build another MINI.

It seems that MINI of Hawaii does indeed do runflat repairs....but not sure you'd want to take it there for a fix. Why I didn't look at this before I drove off.....I have no clue, but this is what I found when I got home:

Looks like they cleaned your rim for you!
How did they repair your tire? Did they patch from the inside or plug it? What did they charge for your repair? Be careful since you lose your speed rating when you have flats repaired. Did MoH tell you that? The flat tire is no longer VR rated, but one rating lower, or HR rated. Do not do more than 130 mph on that tire.

Glad to hear that you got your tire repaired.
Yes, you need to back off on those 130 mph jaunts through downtown Honolulu.
Be careful of those nasty potholes full of water and looking like puddles- lots of damaged tires and rims out there lately.
So did you check? Do you have a spare?
Didn't think so.

nice half dirty, half clean wheel. i'm not surprised that they returned your car like that. anyhow, did they put your whole car through their car washing machine? did you check your other wheels? whenever i check my car in for service, i ask them to remove the car wash tag b/c i dont trust that machine on the car (although it's probably an expensive machine that is not supposed to scratch, etc) -- instead, i take my car to erik808 or minihune since they wash at least 2x/week and do a thorough job.
>>They did clean it....that's what I'm talking about!

===>Just washed it last night. Please, please, please do not rain at all until at least tomorrow late afternoon

geez.....between work, motherhood and all other things that busy a person like me....there ain't enough time to wash 2x/week. I'm lucky if I wash once per week....just ask the_beastmaster. He always seems to catch me and my MINI on the dirtiest days of the week!
Dirtiest day of the week!
Right, more like dirtiest hour of the day!
Your son looks like he's capable of washing your car for you. I used to wash and wax my mom and dad's cars as a kid. If you get the Prolong dry wash at Daiei (it's still on sale for the refill bottle) it's easy to use. Spray on, wipe down, buff off. I can do mom's MINI in @ 5 minutes.

Hmmm, $1 to was the tires? Since he has small hands, he can don a good job on the wheels, too. I mean that brake dust from the stock pads is just NASTY! I'll pay him $2 to clean my wheels and tires. Hey, what about K2 Tire and Wheel Cleaning! That's the ticket! K2 get it, Keiki's Keiki.
I'm sure we can drum up some business here for tire and wheel cleaning. Minihune can run on his R90s if K2 can clean them!

hmmm...i'd definitely sign up for k2's tire and wheel cleaning service. that way, at least my wheels will be clean for a bit. in fact, they'd stand out quite a bit since they're white. kinda like those really dark/tanned people who do some teeth polishing for those pearly whites. when they smile, they kinda blind you.
Ok folks.....keep an eye out for K2's Tire and Wheel Cleaninf service at the next MINI and a movie!
kbseto...I used to be one of those folks with the dark tan and the white teeth back in my surfing days. Although some people may consider me sorta tanned, when my old surfing crew sees me, they always tease about how white I am. Eeek!

Got back from the dealer two days ago. Both front tires have "bubbles" and dealers says replace the rims too. Yeah, pay $300@ for 2 tires and $400 each for rims that I have to wait for (not in stock) and repeat this every year because of our potholes.
Warning! Low profile tires, like the 205/45R17, damage easily due to our poor road conditions and may often fail to protect your rims.
If my rims are indeed toast, I'm downsizing to 16" and going wider. I'm also going conventional with a $20 compressor from Costco, a can of "fix-a-flat" and AAA service via the cell phone.
This is the wrong place for low profile tires and wanted anyone else considering a Mini here to realize what their annual cost of maintenance would be with 17" or 18" wheels. I'll let ya'll know when we're safe to cut corners again. Untill then we're driving gently and praying the sidewalls don't blowout before replacements arrive. Oh, didn't I mention that I haven't found cheaper non-RF tires in 205/45R17 locally?

Runflats are expensive if you buy them locally. The best place to get them is from Tirerack.com. The Pirellis are $165 and the Dunlops are $238 each. Shipping is @ $20 each tire. The tires will usually arrive with in a couple of days after placing your order.
Take pictures of the damaged tires and wheels and the Repair order from MINI. If the Service Advisor will state the damage was due to potholes it will help. Then you will have to figure out which pothole did the damage and you can submit your request to either the city or state (depending who owns the street that has the pothole) for reimbursement. It is a long process that may take up to a year. However, if they do reimburse you, it will be worth it.
On my MCS, I was running 18s with 215/35s and I really didn't have too much problems with potholes. My BMW runs on 245/40/18 and I'm upgrading to 245/35/20 very soon. You just have to keep an eye out for potholes and avoind them. A good place to practice these maneuvers is at BMWCCH's Spring Fling Driving School.
