As you know, I'm on the big island for a week of R&R, you sons of guns have it made when it comes to motoring roads, I drove from the Hilton Waikoloa, south on 19 to 11 and around to Volcano National Park yesterday and I would have given a very important body part to have have been at the wheel of a MINI instead of a Jeep Grand Cherokee But I had fun even behind the wheel of the wallowing pig of a truck. I have seen an all yellow S, flashed lights but no response and an indi blue with a painted UJ on the roof parked over at a Taco Bell in a shopping plaza. I also passed an all BRG on 19 yesterday but saw him too late to flash of honk.

Back to your roads. I would drive around the island at least once a week if I lived here, especially on the secondary roads like 190 and 200, 130 to Volcano national park, crater rim drive and some little scenic route off 19 with a lot of one lane bridges was also a blast.

Anyone want to trade a MINI for a Jeep this weekend?

maybe because of the mini being an anti suv thing?

Maybe for those of us in non-MINI vehicles we could sport a friendly MINI logo flag that would be a sign that we mean no harm.

My family & I grew up driving (riding then me behind the wheel) from Hilo/Kona to Kohala (North tip of the island), home of my grandparents, on our school breaks. That stretch from Waimea (brrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Enjoy, X2Board!

I LOVE the BIG Island. We've been there twice for a week each time. That was BMC (before MINI Cooper) but I can imagine having one to drive there! WoooHooo!

We had a similar experience driving our son's Camry from San Diego to Chicago a few weeks ago. In our heads, we thought we were in a MINI and waved at every one we saw. One cute guy in Monterey in a red/white Classic MINI saw our thumbs up and waved and grinned. Otherwise, no one else paid attention to the Toyota wavers.

Have FUN!! (GO Cubs and Roll Tide!!! ... I can't help it )

The BIG island of Hawaii is the one with the active volcanoes and also the youngest and largest of the inhabited Hawaiian Islands. Being the largest (and not that large a population) there are many long roads that are relatively empty so it is true one could have a grand ole time Motorin. You can also drive from sea level to 12,000 feet.
Gas prices are a hefty $2.50 or more. Costs alot to canoe the gas over there I guess. The only way to have more thrills over there is to take a helicoter ride to the volcanoes for a quick peek.

Have fun, enjoy the ride.

I found gas for $2.10 in Hilo, in Kona it's about $2.28, I've paid more in Los Angeles, so it's not too bad here, but I'm going to appreciate my $1.79 when I get back home.

I travel to Kona alot until July- I'm taking a break until Nov. But gas was over $2.50 a gallon for the good stuff at that time. It's great the prices went down that far. On Oahu this week I pay about $2.03 per gallon for premium.
So those folks in Maui and Kona have it hard all the time. Beats $5 per gallon in the UK. But there the cars get 45 mpg so it all evens out. You're lucky this week the weather is great.

I LOVE the Big Island! I've been there twice, and I hope to visit there again soon within the next several months. Volcanoes are so cool.

I took an intro geology class at UH in 1999, and our field trip was to the Big Island. We were accompanied by real live geologists as we traipsed around Volcanoes park. The highlight was heading to the end of Chain of Craters road, and then getting out of the vans and hiking to the live lava flow. The geologists gave us heavy leather gloves and hammers and we were able to actually play with the lava. We'd pull some molten lava out of the flow (a small, slow surface flow - no danger if you are sure-footed) and then quickly try to mold it around a penny or a marble. The lava hardened VERY quickly so it was a real challenge. And once it cooled off, it was extremely fragile, like spun glass. Playing with molten lava was a unique experience indeed. Also, since it is 2000 degrees F, pretty hot - really felt like we were singeing our eyebrows off. The best way to describe it is like standing too close to huge bonfire - doable, but really intense. I loved the whole experience, and my geology teacher accused me of becoming a "lava monster."

But the Big Island also has Big Island Chocolates ... black sand beaches ... petroglyphs ...that awesome restored heiau whose name I can't recall (the refuge one) ... and Big Island Chocolates!

(sigh) I can't wait to go back. Y'all have fun there!

Premium. Now that's a whole other story here in Kona, the cheapest I've seen is $2.63 Feeding a hi-po car here is not cheap.

Aloha and Mahalo,

High speed internet access in my hotel room I'm heading to Big Island Chocolate tomorrow, so far, my other favorite chocolate place is Donkey *****, I'm addicted to those things

BTW: Which way is faster to Hilo? Via Waimea or heading back past the airport and through town and the Captain Cook area?

I would think that the Waimea way is faster but it doesn't really matter. Ask your Hotel for assistance.
Where you want to go in Hilo is Big Island Candies at 585 Hinano street. (808) 935-8890.Not far from the airport.

When I work in Hilo my rental car automatically stops there for a refill of cookies and chocolate. I get to sample the coffee and some goodies. It is a requirement.
Your map to find it:

If you find one of the local ice cream shops try the poha berry flavor.
Enjoy.

i can imagine motoring around the island. the highway stretches are longggg with relatively few cars. but that is also why they have such horrific car crashes in the populated areas. drivers be flying on the main highway and don't slow down when they come into the towns. cars be turning, people be crossing, and bam! especially when it's only a 2-lane highway. i've heard a lot from my sis and brother-in-law who both practice in kona, and he also happen to work in the local er.

you've gotta drive thru the north end of the island. thru the luxury resort areas on the west side and eventually thru the kohala/hamakua/waimea area. the change in climate is amazing. from the hot desolate lava fields to the cool relatively dry mountainous air. then you got the wet lands of hilo on one side and the dry land of kona on the other. the big island has got pretty much all the possible changes in elevation/climate, all in a day's drive.

have fun!
