Rear hatch just... opened...

So I had a weird thing happen to me tonight... as I was driving down my parents driveway I heard a loud "POP" and my interior lights came on. Come to find out my rear latch had opened.. I did have the hatch open earlier in the day when I put some groceries in.. but no signals came on that it wasn't shut properly? I guess my question is, has this happened to anyone else?

Funny, something similar happened to me. I had just started driving when the alert came up saying trunk was open. I hadn't gone into my trunk for days. Got out, sure enough it was open. For me, since my key was in my pocket I figure either keys or phone hit the open trunk button and it opened up

I kind of thought the same thing... but my keys were in the ignition. I am just going to chock it up to the hatch just closed enough to not trigger the sensor yet not closed enough to...well... stay closed haha

For whatever it's worth, I had the same thing happen a few times on my 335i.

wait, does the R53 have a power release for the trunk where it pops the trunk open? Mine will only unlock but doesn't pop itself like my wife's R56.

My key fob does not pop open the GP hatch.
I have found that it is easy for the hatch to not close/latch completely when closing the hatch. I have to give it a good slam for it to close completely.
Adjusting the rubber stops may help a little.

As far as I know they key fob just "unlocks" it, but I have to manually open it via the panel on the bottom side of the latch handle.

I think it's a BMW thing... my 330ci did it to me a couple of times, but I just figured I accidentally hit the trunk button on my keys....

if this continues to happen then you have water in it and that means a bad seal. the latch cover has to be removed, dried out and then replaced carefully so as not to crimp the rubber seal.
