Salt Spring Island (near Victoria, BC) seems to have the most expensive gas in Canada.
$1.70 per litre (and that's only 91 octane) or $6.44/ US gal

MINI is a year old, but has never been filled on Salt Spring, only on Vancouver Island ( where 94 octane is $1.60) or the mainland...

I went from a Dodge Full Size Pickup getting 11 miles to the gallon to a new Clubman 4 weeks ago. My fuel bill has not gone down i just have a lot more fun driving longer drives now.

Hopefully the newness will wear off soon so i can start saving on fuel costs.

Paid $3.99 regular (87 octane) yesterday and still getting 35+ MPG on it. Have only seen about 1/2 mile per Gallon drop in mileage. First 4 tanks of gas were premium (93) and getting 36.5 to 37 MPG. Switched to regular 5 tanks ago and have found that i still get 35.8 to 36.5 MPG.

So roughly about $5.40 per gallon...

Wow! I guess I need to stop complaining about the gas prices in my area ($3.86 per gallon of 93 octane).

Does anyone else search out the cheapest gas before fueling?

Here's a couple of links that will help save you some driving time:

MSN Cheap Gas Finder

Mapquest Gas Finder

Motortrend Gas

Wow, almost 60 cents/gallon less than here in LA, 93 octane vs 91, and you don't have to pump your own gas! I miss living in NJ sometimes.

I'm curious as to what will happen in the US when you guys finally go over $5/gallon. Will it be a psychological barrier? Here we had the usual grumbling, but in the end everyone paid the higher prices (including H2 drivers). Looks like new SUV sales are in the tank though.

As of today, i think it's about 4.20 for premium. I'm not to sure. I havent been to how much it is. I fill up once a week or once every 10 days, depending on my mileage for the week.

what makes me laugh is watching how "sheepish" the average American is. the gov and media combine storys and America follows rite along.

there is so much more going on here to worry about besides gas prices, but yet thats all we worry about, because its "infused" in our minds, it's our "hot topic"

you do realize that you are supposed to put a min of 91 octain in a mini for a reason rite?
knock, ping, blown pistons. I know youll hear from many people on here to "claim" thyey are doing so with "no problems" but it does give problems down the road. always use 91. look at it this way. It only costs a couple dollars more per fill up.

shactzy62: Just to add to what muladesigns1 said, with the difference in gas mileage between the MINI and your old pick-up... you're still coming out ahead of the game :-)

I use shell v-power exclusively in mine. The car has been filled with regular and I can tell the difference in how it feels when I'm driving. It's worth it to pay a couple bucks more to save yourself a few grand down the road.

Bought my Mini lightly used...2004 w/ 18k miles. I had no idea until now that I needed anything more than "regular." Is it really necessary to use "premium"? Don't go all crazy on me please. I'm just learning to love my Mini unconditionally. I still have feelings for my Yukon.

I wont go crazy! In a sentence, yes. it will be harmfull to the engine because the engine will start to knock and ping, which is damage to the pistons. Also if the engine does not have the rite octain it will retard the timing and you will loose power, which means you will step harder into the throttle to get it up to speed and use more gas.
also, the manufacture of the car built it and if they say 91, listen to them. they built it, they know more then us

Thanks for the info. It's actually an '05. I don't know why I'm hung up on '04. It's on a 1/2 tank, so from here on, it'll get 91 octane. Luckily, there is a price war going on right now in a smaller town I have to pass thru on the way home, so regular is only $3.64/gallon. So, I'm sure 91 is reasonable.
