Just bought my first MINI TODAY. It's an '02 (hold your gasps) MCS I absolutely love it so far. It looks and feels good. Obviously a used car, so I'm hoping for the best.

I'm 21 too btw!

Congrats on your 'new' car! Don't forget to do the preventative maintenance.

Plugs, all the filters, oil, etc. How many miles do you have on it?

Absolutely. Its just over 100k. I had a jeep cherokee previously and always did my own maintenance when possible. The first thing I did when I got home was to look at the coolant tank, and when I can figure out where the PS fan is, I'll check that out as well. I plan on doing a full maintenance check and service when the semester is over and I'm back in my home driveway. In the meantime, the Bentley manual sounds like a good graduation present.

How is insurance on a MINI cooper for a 20-25yo? I'll be 21 when i buy a MINI (20 now) and i already pay $1.2k a year on a suzuki grand vitara. I'm male so i know that will increase the costs..

The Bentley manual is a good idea. As for the PS fan, I am not sure if you can see it without jacking up the front, but I jacked up the front of my car and it is almost in the center align with the wheels. It looks a lot like a PC cooling fan.

Bushings are another thing to check, my front control arm bushings were shot (I replaced mine at 83K).

Good luck!

Its kinda interesting. THe brand new MINI of Des Moines dealer had a grand opening event last thursday and there were hardly any other drivers around my age there. Just myself and a highs schooler with a Countryman ALL4.

I guess the man thing is the aspect of actually being able to afford a MINI. Even if your parents help out with assisting in getting you one, there are still a lot of maintenance costs that go along with owning one. I think that is why there are generally less in our age group.

Depends on what Insurance agency you go through. With no accidents or tickets or anything, I'm at right around $700 per year for the MINI alone.

Jealous, I'm going to be 21 in August, and my insurance is over $1500/year. But I can't complain, that's a hell of a lot cheaper than I'd ever imagine, actually it's the reason I'm able to afford the car. Full coverage on my MINI is less than what I was paying for state minimum coverage (no collision/comprehensive) on my 10 year old civic. Go figure. Geico is highly recommended for MINI's though, my MA suggested and he was definitely right as far as their rates go.

First MINI for me at 24.
Second MINI for GF. First was an 06 MCS that was loaded with hidden issues. Now she's got a much nicer 07 Cooper that she loves.

I did the same. I was down to a Scion Tc, Nissan Sentra, or a MINI Cooper. The Nissan dealer that my dad had been going to for his Xterra started going downhil, so the sentra was out and the MC's insurance for a 16 year old male was cheaper than the Tc's. Good times and fond memories. Keep motoring!
