My MMC thoughts. Some DEEP thoughts so read when you have time and patience ... I usually don't get THIS deep (usually just quote silly laws which I don't always agree with either).

Now that I'm rested and slept on it ... Here is what I think.

When this thread started, I read it, and like some others thought Whats the point? I actually asked for a number pretty late in the game #57. I could have gotten a top ten # and sold it on eBay because those are the ones worth the most, but waited to long

I decided to get one because ... "I got it". Being the type of person who normally joins nothing (or rarely), I too saw no purpose ... then I realized it had nothing to do with anything but being part of a culture. Call it ... a subset of the NAM culture. It SHOWED enthusiasm. People are proud and can't wait to add their MMC number to their sigs (just like Clo posted above) ...

There is no commercialism, no marketing ... just for fun to SHOW enthusiasm without bowing down to the MINI deities (sorry Edge, but I really don't like all the MINI marketing hype anymore than you like the "greed" over GP sales over MSRP ... call it a personal choice).

Does it serve a purpose? Sure it does ... showing enthusiasm. Is it sanctioned by anyone? Who cares? Not important to me. How many active posters are there on NAM? Maybe 1000? Getting 500 signed up is very good (although some come and go) all showing enthusiasm.

When Mpower disappeared off the face of the Earth, I asked around and nobody really wanted to take on the hassle of keeping things sorted out. I decided I would step up simply because it was "a good thing" for the community.

Giving BACK to the community (IMO) is a good thing ... community service. Until now, nobody has been upset. Did I screw up the order someplace in line?... If I did, it wasn't intentional. We all make mistakes ... but nobody else offered to help.

This was A LOT OF WORK, to sort things out, read every day, make sure everyone feels part of the system. The ONLY other person to show signs of "consistently and seriously" wanting to help were Tori near the end of the Summer.

When I sold my MINI, I felt it inappropriate to continue doing this and using the number ... it didn't make sense. It doesn't make me any less an enthusiast ... if I didn't care about this Marquee, I wouldn't be here. I've been fortunate enough to get a worthy replacement.

What is the common element of an MMC member?

NAM provides a forum for discussion on many subjects. MMC provides a place to show enthusiasm within the confines of that virtual space ... two totally different things. One a venue, the other a subculture ... It's that simple.

Tori has the flame now and I know this all hasn't made it easy on her. I hope she has the patience ...

If no one else joins ... so be it ... but I'm betting on the next 500 newbies who get the enthusiasm from buying their new cars wanting to show it and be proud enuff to display in their sigs.

I see MMC as being a silly Monty Python-esque running joke/skit on NAM. No harm meant, no harm done. I have NO idea what happened to MPower, but so what? This has been a fun thread and I hope everyone responds to its light-hearted banter, ignoring the occasional flare-up of temper. It's a fun virtual club.
