After weeks of pretty much ignoring this thread I decided to check in -- only to find out that Jerk has died. Darn! I had hoped to hear the further adventures of Jerk and see more pix of his fantastic jerkiness.

Please tell me that "the operating table" isn't a euphenism!

[QUOTE=Edge

If people are looking for a sense of individuality with their own unique number, well... guess what, you already have that - it's your NAM username, and it's the most unique and individual way to identify yourself here on NAM, something that will remain yours and only yours, not to be confused with anyone else.]

That is what I used to think before someone signed up using my name with just the space removed. Now there is a minimonkey and a MINI Monkey. Tell me that isn't confusing. I asked him to change it a little since I had it first but he wouldn't. The moderators wouldn't help either. So if anyone is looking for a new name how about M babischkin, Randy BMC or maybe MSFIT TOY. Those are real unique choices. I'm not feeling a real sense of individuality with my username anymore.

Oh dear, namwob! I was really fond of Jerk based on your wonderful pix! She was such a personality!! My condolences........so sorry!

I want to be MMD #B! (Especially since my last name begins with "b!")

(Um....what does MMD stand for, anyway? )

Well Ryan if you had looked at the post I made more than 3 hours before you chimed in, you would have noticed that A)I made the same remark to Pat who claimed that he has no number associated to him because he's retired. And B) Have said repeatedly that I have enough numbers assigned to me, and don't need to voluntarily add another one, especially one that serves no purpose.

Instead of judging everyone based on your own ideals, let people do their own thing. Just because you don't like this thread or what it represents doesn't mean you need [or we want you] to participate in it.

I find it odd that someone that "calls" himself a core moderator would be stirring up so much crap! If you don't like the number thing then go moderate elsewhere............I'm sure there is another thread in need of your "services". This is fun to some of us.......of course we aren't as mature as you I'm sure.

Don't pick on him, he wasn't the only one speaking up. We're entitled to express our opinion, and we are doing just that... same as you. Provided we're not slandering or insulting any one person (and I don't think either of us have been rude about it), then you should be able to discuss it without telling either of us to go somewhere else.

Most people have yet to really give my question of "Why?" much more of an answer than "Why not?". namwob made an excellent point... starting yet another club called "MMD" which stands for nothing at all, and using letters instead of numbers. It's just as meaningful as this whole "MMC" idea, which is not at all.

The only argument that made ANY sense is "MINI Monkey", who complained that there's another user called "minimonkey", so it's hard to keep the identity separate. Even so, I don't think that most people are going to pay much attention to the little MMC # in order to separate their identities... and there are other ways to deal with the problem, such as a very unique signature, or perhaps getting approval to change your NAM username (although one questions why such similar names were allowed in the first place).

Anyone can feel free to PM me at any time about a name change. With 19,000+ members, we don't try to maintain unique identities by blocking people from signing up with similar usernames. It would just be way to cumbersome.

As for me, I stand by my pledge earlier in this thread. #1279. That's my number. It's the number I got from MCO when I joined. There is significance behind that for me. Just passing though.

Heres some of my numbers 623204959107816264215280613943589.
I'm sure there are more, but I'm happy with #10 on this thread that means nothing and hurts no one.

So are you saying that I'm not allowed to ask questions because I'm a moderator? Better yet are you trying to chase a moderator away from a thread?

Moderator or not, I do have a right to ask what the purpose of something is.

What about me?! I gave you good answers....

Maybe some are sensitive to your questions because the whole thing doesn't really make sense or have a purpose and yet we feel pressured to answer to you as to "why?". And whatever answer we give out doesn't fit a profile of a good enough answer, when it's stated in the first post that it's purely for fun, doesn't have any meaning. Is it so hard to let something so meaningless like this go unnoticed by those who don't get it or don't benefit from it?

I have lost track about which is the latest number. Is 250 open? If it is, I will take it.

By the way, lets everyone quit bickering and whinning. Stay on topic.

I got two of those MINI Welcome kits in the mail. Do you think I can eBay one of them and THEN maybe let the winner "rent" my MMC # for a week as an incentive?

Nah, that would probably be an Auction scam

I know it would be a little cumbersome but I don't think it would have been out of line for the moderater to ask minimonkey to modify his username a little since I had it first. I'm sure the system can't tell that someone has chosen something so close but the moderators could help when it happens like this. I would bet that if this had happened to one of the really popular members or a vendor, the newer member would have been asked to change his name some. I was told that I could change mine but that was all the aid I was offered. I'm disappointed because in reading posts with minimonkey I feel that we are on different sides of issues and I don't want to be confused with him.

I joined this club just for fun and I certainly don't think it helped to distinguish me from him.

*wipes tears out of his eyes* whoo!

This is just priceless. I hadn't checked out this thread in weeks, after I looked at it and saw it was just a pointless fun thing that meant nothing. Looks like some people should have taken the same approach...

Well, now I definitely want a number. If I can stop laughing enough to go back a page or two and figure out what number we're on, I'll come back and edit my post.

Edit: alright, as far as I can tell, I am MMC #233, a number which was callously rejected by another member as unworthy. I will give it a loving home, in much the same manner that people adopt abused retired racing greyhounds.

What's the point? Seriously, I have yet to see any real reason to participate. The number is arbitrary, and it's not as though being "in" MMC has any benefit whatsover beyond putting the number into your signature. There are no newsletters, no separate meetings or gatherings, no special discounts or benefits.

If people are looking for a sense of individuality with their own unique number, well... guess what, you already have that - it's your NAM username, and it's the most unique and individual way to identify yourself here on NAM, something that will remain yours and only yours, not to be confused with anyone else.

If people are looking for bragging rights, because their number is lower than someone else's... I'm sorry, but that's just childish and honestly, quite pathetic.

Seriously, stop! Everyone stop. I am going to die from laughing too hard. I can't believe I've ignored this thread for so long!

You're on. What number are you, by the way? I think my number is pretty cool. I think that 233 nanometers is a common laser wavelength, but I could be wrong. It might be 633.

If lasers aren't cool, well then I don't know what is.
