Just picked up my son a 2016 Mini Countryman S and it has the round 3 button FOB with the chrome snap ring. As far as I could find, this is called the SmartKey and it is the one with the three small buttons along the outer edge of the remote.

Two questions:
First, the one I have is a bit beat up and dirty. I understand that the shell/case can be replaced by simply moving the circuit board over. The question is can I find the original look (with Mini Logo/badge) in the US? I have only seen it available in the Nertherlands. All I’ve been able to find in the US is a copy without the logo on a few sites.

Second, is my only option going to the dealer for a second Key FOB? I’d like to get a second one but would like to avoid the dealer abuse on the price. Can a locksmith do it? Where can I get a FOB?

If you want the genuine (new) you will have to go to the dealer and program it, or find a good used one and swap over. Its a theft part so most people go to the dealer and have it coded. I know some other shop can program them but I have not seen one personally do it.

 

Occasionally someone will post up an alternate source or method for new keys. However it's safer to just buy one from an online MINI dealer such as minipartsmass. They are approx 20% cheaper than the dealer last time I checked. You need to provide them with certain items of proof.
