Mechanic recommendation needed in Mount Pleasant SC

My sister in law has an '05 convertible with 70k on it. Looks like the CV is stuck in 3rd gear according to a supposedly reputable transmission shop. She is in SC and I'm in NH. Her son is helping her out but he is not mechanically inclined. I am, so he calls me. But I know nothing about the automatic, both of mine have been the standard.

The shop suggested he replace it with a used, low mileage transmission he found, for about $4500. Again, not knowing much about these that sounds like a reasonable solution.

My question is can somebody recommend a good mechanic for her to get a second opinion from, as well as using going forward? Any other thoughts about the current situation appreciated.

The dreaded CVT. I know that Hendricks has the MINI dealership in Charleston so I would check on FB for some Charleston based MINI groups. They will know where the independent shops are. A web search turns up a couple but I have no idea how good they are.

Thank you. I'll check that out. I would like to get a personal experience though.

OK so talk about Ad placement. I ask a question about a convertible and the ad placed in your response (not by you) was for "metastatic Melanoma" .

Nope, not a pop up. Right below the body of your text in the same dialog box.

Windows 10 pro/fully patched
Chrome/ latest version

Wasn't a big deal, I always see ads like that here. Usually just one per message reply

Should not be getting something from us. I am going to ask that the Tech folks look into the matter. It may be on your end.

I'm not sure if you meant that (being a Hendrick dealership) as derogatory or not, but my experiences with MINI of Charleston service were nothing short of exemplary. The lead service writer (Stuart Kestenbaum) is quite simply the best I've ever encountered, and he's a true MINI enthusiast in every sense of the word. I live near Wilmington NC, and the closest MINI dealership is Flow in Raleigh or MINI of Charleston- I plan to take our new Countryman to Charleston.

Bought my R53 from them. On a used MINI many times an independent shop is more economical.
