Replacing R53 Body Control Module

My dealer states that the only way a shorted BCM can be replaced is to purchase a new one from the factory in Germany throgh the dealer, have the factory program it to match the VIN, and then for the dealer to replace the faulty one. Cost estimate $1,400, 2-3 weeks.

If this is true, it should win the award for the dumbest engineering feat I have come across.

Any info that can shed light on this priblem would be much appreciated. I cannot justify $1,400 on a faulty ECU of a 2004 S.

Many thanks,
Bahman

There are a couple of threads about reprogramming the BCM.

The best advice I saw in the threads was to call Way Motor Works in Atlanta; they may be able to help.

Oh...replacing the BCM is not difficult once it's been programmed..I've pulled mine out multiple times to change my CVT fluid because it's easier to fill from the top and you don't need a special tool.

Your post got my curiosity up so I started looking to just to see what's out there. I found one interesting post you may want to consider as an option if you can get a used BCM. See the link below..

Celna Mini,

Thank you for the helpful info. My problem is that the original BCM was shorted due to AC condensation discharge, and I unknowingly discarded it. So, the chip replacement will not be possible. I will contact Way and see what they can do.

Thanks again.

The BCM is in the passenger footwell and it makes no sense to pull it for changing CVT fluid. Are you talking about the ECU which is in the engine compartment?

rkw,

The issue is to re-program a BCM ( RH footwell, inside) from a donor car B to replace a failed BCM in Car A. Physical replacement of the BCM is not an issue. The issue is how to program BCM from Car B to work with tbe VIN of Car A.

My post was directed at Cenla Mini. His comment didn't make sense.
