What brand of replacement batteries did you get for your Mini?

I need to get a replacement battery for my '09 Mini Clubman "S". If you purchased one, what brand did you get and was it an AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat)?

Also, does a new battery in an Mini Clubman "S" require one to register it, and if so, how is this done?

Thanks...

Edit: Title should have read ... battery... NOT batteries

I had a 2008 Mini Cooper S and I picked up a Duralast H5-DLG, perfect fit replacement. I didn't have to register because I don't have the IBS system, you have it if there's an extra wire coming from the negative terminal. There's been threads on that in the past with pics (how to tell) but I think as an 09 you should probably not have to register the battery.

I drove in to a big box auto supply parking lot, told the guy I needed a new battery. He looked it up on his crystal ball, got one from the back room and installed it for me. I care not what brand, it still works and that was 4 years ago. They all do the same thing only a little different in some cases.

There are but a few companies making batteries for cars, so its likely that wherever you go its the same thing.

We put all of our customers into the group 47 Super Start Gold from O'Reilleys, it's about $150 and is a great battery, we've only had to warranty one in the 3+ years we've been selling them.

Any group 47 battery will do the trick, just don't skimp on the price, cheap things are, well, cheap..

We have two dealer level scan tools that allow us to register battery replacements, one is an Autologic and the other is a Snap-On Verus Edge, if you can find a local shop with a Snap-On Verus or equivalent they should be able to register the battery for you.

We always register the battery, even if the car has the IBS system installed, keeps from potential charging problems, but if you decide to install an AGM battery you need to do a retrofit conversion in the DME software, which only a dealer level tool can do.

That is good to know, not that I'm considering it but this bit of info should be in an easy to find sticky thread, shouldn't it?

How can one know if the IBS system is in their particular mini cooper?

EDIT: Okay, I found this link - maybe others may also find it helpful...

If your negative battery cable has a box on it, like in the photo, you will need to register the battery, when you change it. If it doesn't have that box, you can just put the new battery in and forget it.

Group 47 batteries fit both R53s and R56s right?

Yes, note if you have navigation or a newer MNI, you will have the IBS system.

Can you define 'Newer MINI?' I think it would help those who don't know what the IBS system is and what year it might affect.

Many of the LCI cars (2011 & newer) have the IBS system, but regardless of having the IBS system or not we would still recommend having the battery registered to the car.

How can the ecu know that there is a different battery in the car, if it doesn't have the IBS? Can you even register a new battery if there is no Intelligent Battery Sensor?

Just saw this, sorry for the delay.

Most were on the 2011+, but most were on MINIs with Navigation system from the factory pre 2011. Gen 2 MINI is when it started. I have it on my 2012 JCW Coupe w/ Nav.

If it has the IBS its best to register it, if no IBS then you don't. The system ecu knows its IBS as its wired and programmed in the system.

I'm curious about this as well. If you don't have IBS is it just storing the history of the install? Or is it doing something on top of that?

As for which battery I'm putting in... When I inquired with Mini for a replacement, they said the factory puts in different ones based on the build (even on the same model) and they couldn't tell without looking under the hood to see if it was a 70Ah or 55Ah. My original is 70Ah. But the Mini battery only has a 24 month warranty, so I put in a Bosch H6/L3/48 which is 36/96 warranty. It fit without a problem even though it's 1.25" longer.
