Dealer don't want to cover warranty..need advice

2012 MCS 30K miles.

I'm kinda clueless and was shocked to hear what the dealer told me after taking my MCS for the 30K mile "service".

Can you tell me what does that includes? All they did was a checkup. Bottom line is that they did a 30K mile checkup. Nothing was changed or replaced. First time owning a mini, so please tell me if this is normal.

Then the kicker is that they said I would have to pay for the brake pads and rotor. When I asked if those covered under warranty ( which I have since the car is only 30K miles)? They said yes, but since I am the second owner and didn't pay for the brake upgrades which by the way was done at the dealer....that they will not replace it for free. Then handed a work order for $815.

When I bought the car, it came with the extended warranty to 100K miles and the first owner did a lot of work on the car...all at the dealer. I have the all the paper works. Please tell me if the dealer is trying to pull a fast one on me?

Do you have the paperwork from the extended warranty? I would have a good look at that.

Well, I don't have the paperwork for the extended warranty. The thing is that I am not even into my extended warranty yet. At this point, I should still be in my original warranty, right?

I am not much help but dont our cars have a 3yr/36k mile warranty and for that same time frame free maintenance? That includes brakes right? The only thing it doesn't cover is tires.

If so I am not sure why you wouldn't get your brakes repaired.

30K and they say the brake pads are shot? I'd have someone else - or yourself - measure them. They should be thicker the 1/8" minimum and there's no way the discs would need replaced this soon. You're gettin' sold a pig in a poke from that dealership. Furthermore, no way is a full brake job worth 800 bucks.

Define brake upgrades? If they are not the factory parts then whatever warranty the dealer provided would be what you get. Might only be to original purchaser or one or two years. As to 30k service the Mini uses condition based service alerts and they do things when the system calls for it, not generally just because you hit a mileage threshold.

When I bought my 2012 it came with 3yr / 36K no cost maintenance - which for me turned out to be a couple of oil changes, a set of front brake pads, and a few sets of wiper blades. The no cost maintenance is separate from the warranty which is 4 years / 50K. Brake pads, rotors, tires, etc. are wear items and not covered by warranty so if you are outside of the 3 years (likely since it is a 2012) then you pay.

Either DIY or take it to an independent shop, brake pads on the JCW fronts are quick and easy, even if you have to do rotors it isn't hard.

Thanks for all the replies.

squawSkiBum, I didn't know the warranty is 3yr/36K. If that is the case then, I will have to fix it myself. They could have told me that, instead of some BS that the original owner paid for the brake upgrade (from S to the JCW brakes) so now I have to pay to get pads replaced. That part didn't make any sense to me.

At this point, I don't even know what is covered under my warranty anymore.

^ this.

3 yr/36k miles = free maintenance
4 yr/50k miles = factory bumper to bumper warranty

If you were within 3 yr/36k miles, you probably could have gotten the brake work done. As another poster stated; clutch, brakes, battery, wipers etc are considered normal wear items, replaced on your dime.

Yes in the 3yr/36k , most likely it would be done. On the JCW brake kits you could have a indy do it and get the kit from us.

You will need the For JCW Sport brakes since you said the owner upgraded to them.

Oem full kits is about 589. We have other options also.

Those brakes a great, i had them on my R58 JCW.

About 3 yrs ago, BMW changed the warranty stipulations for JCW brake kits. When installation is done by anyone other than a licensed MINI dealer, MINI would not warranty the parts....As far as it being a "non-transferrable warranty part". This is the first I am hearing of that.

ECS, thank you for the links and info. Do you think I need new rotors or can they be turned. I have 29800 miles on them.

I just put brakes and rotors on my MINI, the front wear sensor gave me a warning light at 30,000 Miles.

The front rotor thickness is 22.0 mm new, the wear limit is 20.4 mm

The rear rotor thickness is 10.0 mm new, the wear limit is 8.4 mm

My rotors thickness were OK, but I put new ones on because they weren't very smooth and I didn't want to take them in and wait for them to be machined. I'll machine them later so they'll be ready the next time I get brake pads.

Take the car to an independent shop, if you don't want to do them yourself, it'll be cheaper than the dealer.

Welcome. You can turn them if the wear and final turn is not below the min depth ( wear limit ) with is posted above and on the side of the hat on the rotor marked on the side. . Also with new you will nut have that rust build up on the hat and veins if that bothers you.

The warranty and the paid maintenance are two separate animals (as is the extended warranty).

Factory warranty is 4 yrs/50k miles as noted above and covers any defects.
Maintenance is 3 yrs/36k miles and covers all scheduled maintenance. I know new MY2017 MINIs the maintenance does not carry over to the second owner, but I thought it did for older MINIs. Double check your paperwork.

The CPO warranty is 6 yrs/100k and comes into effect when the original warranty expires. It should be noted that a $50 deductible applies to any warranty work! Salespeople like to leave that bit out or forget about it altogether.

Warrenty is for repaired of defective parts....
Worn out brake pads+rotors Don't meet that description....
Mini has covered brake parts in SOME CASES in the past, but the trend has been to stop...you can ask...maybe get a 50% discount.... But IMO nothing is truely wrong...
Are you entitled to "free wear and tear fixes" till the end if the warranty? No...even when "free scheduled maintenance" is included, breaker are wear items....some cheap items like wipers are sometimes done for free....but again, it a dealer doing goodwill (was free at one point in mini's history).

It's worth noting that there are two "levels" of CPO these days... One that's 6 years / 100k and one that's I believe 5 years / 75k. If buying CPO, be sure you know which you're getting.

You're right - I misunderstood exactly how it works. It depends on the age of the car and the CPO program either adds the 2yrs/50k or 1yr/25k to the original warranty.

From the MINIUSA website:

"You’re covered for 2 years/50,000 miles (whichever comes first), after the expiration of the 4-year/50,000-mile MINI New Passenger Car Limited Warranty, for a total of 6 years/100,000 miles. This includes up to 6 years of 24/7 Roadside Assistance."

"A younger MINI NEXT with more than 300 but less than 36,001 miles. The warranty covers you for 1 year/25,000 miles^ (whichever comes first) after the expiration of the 4-year/50,000-mile MINI New Passenger Car Limited Warranty or for a total of 5 years/75,000 miles.^ This includes up to 5 years of 24/7 Roadside Assistance.^^ Contact your local dealer for MINI Next 575 inventory."

matt12mcs - you've confused warranty and maintenance.

New MINIs come with 3yr/36k miles (whichever comes first) of no-cost maintenance. You have a 2012, which I presume was sold sometime in 2012 - and this has since expired.

Warranty on new MINIs is 4yr/50k miles (again, whichever comes first) and warranty does not cover wear items like brake pads, discs, air filters, cabin filters, wiper blades, tires, etc outside of abnormal defects.

The MINI Next CPO warranties (either the 6/100 or 5/75) do not cover brakes, and are more/less a powertrain-centric extension of the factory warranty.

Brakes are a wear item, and given your vehicle's age and mileage, you likely are due to have the brakes replaced soon. Welcome to the joys of car ownership, amigo.
