*Another* Reliabilty Question...

Background:
I picked up my first MINI on Monday (2011 Countryman S—love it!) Since then, I've been reading about reliability issues on here and r/mini.

I'm just confused because it seems like everyone complaining either has a recall (free fix) or have spent ~$2000 since they've put 60k miles on their car. To me that just doesn't seem like that big of a deal. I have plenty of friends that have poured thousands into their VW's and Hondas. What's the deal? Have you spent more? Should I get out of this car asap?

if its not that big of deal to you then dont worry about it? im guessing you will hear people complain about problems more then people praise something... people dont need help when everything is working fine.. is a mini a honda civic, no.. i had a 96 honda civic and replaced the engine $2500 it was about to roll up on 300k, my honda had problems some i couldn't figure out just put bandaid fixes on and it kept going my mini i will make a point to get fix when i think things are going wrong..and keep up on the maintenance i read some posts where people have 200k on there minis and only had slight problems... and other people had 20k and had a major problem... im guessing that for every 1 major unexplained problem there is more then 100 no problems.. i bought mine knowing that it will need a clutch eventually when? i dont know but i already source a mini mechanic that moonlights in my area and does it for a third of the cost of the dealer. and even at that im mechanically inclined and my freind has a nice shop so worse case im doing it myself and saving even more money. i love mine "had it for 29 days" and am gonna keep it alive forever...

That's fair. I guess my question is more along the lines of, is my mini going to break the bank? Or is it more of an annual higher cost thing?

I also plan on doing work myself and bringing it in as necessary.

You should have the N18 engine which is good. If you have the auto tranny I recommend doing a partial (2.5 qt) drain/fill of the fluid with synthetic now and every 10-15k miles so that it is completely replaced in about 50k miles (3-4 times). Change the engine oil every 5k. That's really all you can do preventatively.

Edit: Make sure the thermostat has been changed under warranty and the oil pump volume control solenoid valve has been inspected for oil leaks.
