How to read code

I tried searching, couldn't find it. My 2012 MCS yesterday showed the yellow engine symbol in the tach, mini went into limp mode. I stopped the car, turned if off then started it back up. Symbol went away, no longer in limp mode. So, can I read the code in the tach via Set/Info, or do I need to scan for codes via the OBD port? Thx!

You need a scanner. Scangauge2 works for me.
