ScanGauge II Questions

Today is one of many days I have where I ask a lot of stupid questions...

I just picked up a ScanGauge II today for $125 from Autozone, after they price matched an online RV vendor. Now, I'm not sure what I'm looking at, and I'm hoping someone can explain it to this idiot (me).

When viewing the BST (Boost) gauge, how do I read the indication? Is it negative numbers equal no boost and positive numbers equal boost? And what do the numbers mean?

How should I read the MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) gauge as it relates to boost?

FWT (F Water Temperature) is what would be a normal "temperature" gauge in other cars, right? What is the normal operating range for my R55S?

Is there a normal range for the FIA (F Intake Air Temperature) gauge?

Seems like the most useful gauges to see would be FWT, FIA, MAP, and BST, once I understand what I'm looking at...LOL. Any other suggestions?

Cheers.

I can't help you with the boost, MAP, or air temp. The Justa doesn't make boost, and air temp does not vary nearly as much as on a turbocharged car.

The coolant temp (FWT) runs about 220F on my car, and from what I have read on most MINIs. Evidently it drops if you hit the Sport button.

I haven't put mine in our R56 yet but:
BST - does mean no boost. It will get into the positive side when the boost is on.
Water temp in an R53 is just a hair under 200. Even in AZ in the 118 heat last week.
Intake temp will depend on a few different things but mostly the intrcooler. On the move I'm about 15 to 20 above ambient air temp. When you come to a stop and heat soak kicks in. I have been about 200.

Again this is all on an R53 so your readings will be a bit different. Just giving you some known data to have an idea what you're looking at.

The FWT is actually Water Temperature in degrees Fahrenheit (it can also be set up in CWT). The normal range, from what I've seen (2012 Countryman non-S) is between 185 and 220 degrees. The Intake Air Temp (IAT) for my car is usually somewhere between 85 and 110 degrees. As a side note, if you send the ScanGauge II back to the manufacturer, they will program it to read the Oil Temp as well. There is not yet a way to read Oil Pressure through the OBDII port, though.

I have a 2013 roadster, with a helix intercooler and NM discharge pipe the IAT stays about two degrees above the outside air temp. Engine is between 220 and 225. In sport mode it drops to 185. Battery is between 14 to 14.1 volts and my RPM's between 675 and 785 without the AC on and between 785 and 800 with AC on. When boost is neg that means vacuum, that is normal.

When I went out today, my FWT ran about 225 degrees F with Sport mode ON.

My R53 runs around 200-210 consistently, but I do have a bigger MISHIMOTO aluminum radiator.

Call Scangauge and they can take the time to explain all your questions in great detail. They are very helpful.

I have had the Scangauge II for about 3 months now. Here are the 4 settings I run and some of the (low/high) numbers I have noticed...

BST: -10.7 to 13.9

FWT: 75 to 220

IAT: 75 to 110

Volts: 14 to 14.3

I really wish there was a setting for oil pressure.

Just got my SGII back from Linear Logic after their MINI-specific software update. Added readings for fuel pressure, engine temp (not sure how this differs from water temp), OIL TEMP (which is what I wanted badly), and a couple of other things. So I will be running Water Temp, Oil Temp, Voltage, and maybe Fuel Pressure (or Boost).

Free upgrade (two month old unit), very quick turnaround (mailed on Wednesday, got it back today).

How does that work? Do I just call them and tell them I want an update?

I dropped them an email and they told me to mail it in and they'd turn it right around. They were true to their word.

There's a thread here someplace about the process (and the contact).

I inquired about the possibility of an oil pressure reading as well, and here is the e-mail that Linear Logic sent to me. Please note that it includes the address to which you need to send your SGII for the update:

We do not have oil pressure yet for MINI. In order to use the XGauges codes we currently have you will need a special program. To get the unit update with the special MINI program please send the unit into our office at:

Linear Logic LLC
Attn: MINI
2222 S Dobson Rd Ste 800
Mesa AZ 85202

There is no oil pressure sender (variable gauge) on the factory engine. It's simply an on/off switch.

So, I tried emailing xgauge@linearlogic.com, and it bounced. Then, I tried emailing them via their web site. No response. Does anyone have a good, current way of getting in touch with them?

See my post above. It has the address you need to send the SGII to in order to have the update done.

OK...got the upgrade taken care of. Now, can someone tell me what the normal operating ranges should be with the new gauges on my R55S?
