Sunroof screen replacement

I totally f#**ed up my sunroof screen this weekend and ended up ripping the whole thing out. Replacement cost $169.00. Not terrible, but of course they say only the deaerlship can do it cause it involves taking the sunfoof apart. Anyone replace theirs on their own? Not sure I even need it but it bothers me.

No idea how to do it but if you mess with removing your sunroof, obviously leaks are a risk. That being said, there are companies that install sunroofs aftermarket that might be able to help you out for less than the dealership.

IMO installing a new sunroof shade is quite simple. Here are the steps to do it.

1. First remove the glass -- there are 3 T25 Torx Screws on each side.
Place glass soft safe area so it won't get sratched or damaged.

2. You will see the location of the roller tabs, on each side of the sunroof - these just "clip" on and off. You can use use a screwdriver or flat-tip plastic wedge to remove them.

3. Slide the old/broken shade off the rails and insert the new one.

4. The plastic tabs "click" back into place.

5. Install and adjust the glass. To adjust it you will be tightening the center screw.(not all the way - you need the glass to move up and down on the ends)

6. You will then push down on the front end of the glass from outside and push up on the rear end of the glass from inside - get someone to help in this situation.

7. You will need to tighten the screws while holding the glass in position.
You will want the glass to be tilted on the rear and "Up" in order to help it open when in the hot weather.

Hope this helps.

Wow Bram - you make it sound so easy.

Have you actually replaced one yourself or did you read how to do it somewhere?

I've been thinking about replacing the screen with something that has no holes - now it sounds do-able.

Did this last weekend!

Thanks for posting this! I bought my Mini Cooper S in 2007 and ever since it was in the show room waiting for me, the darn screens never worked right. They always retracted on their own and never stayed closed; the dealer refused to fix it and frankly I never pushed it on them after one try. Last year they got torn on the sides (both front and rear screens).

I bought the front and rear screens from the link above and installed them myself last weekend. It was a breeze (took about 1.5 hrs to do).

May I suggest to only remove the rear glass first and unscrew one side of the arms (which move your glass up and down) to remove the rear screen (after gently pressing the side tabs). To remove the front screen, just open the sunroof and slide it out. Easy!

Thanks , great you got it fixed.

#4 is also the screen that tends to get holes in it right at the crease in the fabric over time. Bugs and debris fly back and hit it sometimes creating holes. Its easy to change out the Slipstream Deflector. Roll the front glass sunroof back. Clip out the rear section with the spring near the rails. They have little tabs and slide forward then work on the front tabs. Pry easy not to snap them and work your way from one side to the next. Comes out then install n reverse.

Slipstream Deflector Part number 54107355232

Thanks and glad you have things working again.

Help please I got to step3 and got the old one out . When I went to insert the new one, the stop tabs on the top would not allow the sun shade to go back far enough to snap into place. After struggling to get it into the track , I ended up completely buggering up the shade and I am reluctant to get another until I understand why it simply didn't fit properly.
