You know you can set up the current models so that it has a digital read out on the tacho?

I usually do, but I had reset the tpms and hadn't changed it back yet.
On both of my previous Minis I always used the centre speedo and never even had the speed showing in the tach. Worked fine once I got used to looking there and I preferred to have other info on the tach display. Wish they hadn't changed the software to force you to have the speed in the tach on the newer models, but that's obviously what most people were doing anyway, so I get it.

You are NOT forced to set the center/tech readout to speed. You can, in fact, cycle through various live or avg readings.
My you are right, most people set it to speedometer readout (as do I), and leave it at that.

I wish you could have the instant mpg in lower and the speed in the upper. But you can't

Partly correct. 2010 and previous you can change it to something else. In the 2011+, it's speed only in the center of the tach. It's lame.
If the digital speed is the only thing in the middle, then why this big change? I know mine is a little slow to update under hard acceleration, but maybe they fixed that.

Exactly. It was good to have the option of speed there or not. I always had time and temp showing in the tach with instant mpg in the speedo/odo display. Pretty sure this can be coded on the new ones to go back to the way it was before where you had a choice of what was in the tach display. I'll be looking into that when my 2013 shows up.
I'm starting to come to the conclusion that MINI/BMW is just trying to please the regular consumers (non enthusiasts) rather than listening to us enthusiasts... SMH

Makes perfect business sense to me. I personally may not agree, but objectively it makes sense.

If you assume that enthusiasts are <1% of the customers, and are inclined to keep buying their product anyway, why would you expect the manufacturer to behave any differently?
It's not like MINI/BMW extract higher margins from enthusiasts. If anything, we are (or should be!) helping each other to be better informed to drive a harder bargain with the dealers!
I've seen some R53s and I still don't really understand why many thought the change was so dramatic. It doesn't seem too different to me, but I have an R56, so maybe I just don't understand.
People just need something to b!tch about. If they didn't change it every few years, someone would be whining that it's getting old, stale and boring.
