Want to mod my car and has question

I posted this in the First Gear forum (prob the wrong place to have posted this), but haven't really gotten any responses, so I'd thought I try here. I have a 2011 mini (non-s). I want to install an intake kit on my car. I found two kits I liked (K&N 69 SERIES TYPHOON COLD AIR INTAKE SYSTEM and the DDMWORKS intake kit). I like them both, but the question is whether or not they are CARB approved. I have no idea about the DDM, but there is a confusion with the K&N as different sites list it as either CARB approved or not. Can anyone help me with this? If they aren't can anyone reccommend anything like these kits that are CARB approved? My car is also an automatic transmission if that makes a difference.

Contact both of them and ask. Also There is VIP who makes a Cooper intake.

Check the 2nd Gen Non-S section for more help.

Thanks, I was gonna contact ddmworks and was thinking about going to a local autshop about the K&N. Just wanted to see if anyone knew about them before I go, because I don't have much faith in the shop. I assume VIP is CARB approved they're based in a state that follows CARB. It's got a nice sound and while there I was looking at their exhaust kits which, give the car a nice sound. I originally was leaning towards a remus exhaust kit, but I might consider at VIP now. Just gonna check the other parts and do a comparison of prices. I might ask my dealership if they know anything, cause I have to have them replace a door handle prob doing that in a week or two. I plan on having all this all installed in the next couple of months.

Get the DDM intake it has made good power and fits great. I wouldn't worry too much about the CARB as it can be swapped in 10 min for you emissions test.

The only MINI aftermarket intakes that have ever gotten CARB approval is the K&N, and NM Engineering. CARB approval is VERY expensive and takes a long time to get it.
The DDM, VIP, AFE, M7, are NOT CARB approved.

I've been thinking about getting it, I'm really tempted to. Just the whole CARB thing bugs me, especially since NJ can give a people a hard time about noisier cars. Would you happen to know if any of those intakes are in the process of becoming CARB approved? If so how long would I have to wait? Because I'm thinking I might buy the remus exhaust for now if something is coming out soon or even a year from now.

Cops aren't going to pop your hood and check for a CAI if its loud.. They'll check your exhaust. Intakes don't really make your supercharger scream THAT loud. The po-po is more concerned with fart canons.

You are correct that they are more concerned over exhaust, especially the fart canons. I've known people who got into trouble over their exhausts. They have been known to check under the hoods in my area though. They'll check the exhaust first and then make you pop the hood. They tend to check the civics mostly.

K&N isn't really all that great at filtering fine dust and dirt. And if you're looking for more HP, rather than making changes to a regular Mini, you'd be far, far better off time and money-wise to simply by an S model.

MCDude... Our NJ inspections are now a joke. All they do is plug the car into a computer to run the codes. You can get away with anything under the hood as long as the check engine light doesn't go off.

It is really silly that some CAI's are legal and others are not, as they all work the same and none of them create extra emissions!! It is mostly legal BS.

With that said, I have had the DDM intake on my car for 4 years and love it. It works great. Like mentioned it is about 10min's to swap back to stock, ..maybe 1/2hr at most. Not sure how often you have to have your car inspected, here in California it is 1x every 2 years. So, spending 1/2hr at most to bring your car back to stock every 2years is no big deal in my opinion.

yeah it really is legal bs, the intakes don't do anything to increase emissions (maybe a little). I know most if not all intakes I've looked into will pass emissions testing, just that they have to go through the CARB process or whatever. I'm thinking I'll get the ddm, its just with the police. How much louder does the ddm make your car. From the couple of videos I've seen it does quite a bit. Again its not so much inspection that worries me its the police.

Like I said before due to the cost and time it's just not worth it for them to go through the CARB process, they will never sell enough to recover their cost.
Get the intake and enjoy the extra power. The exhaus is only going to give you sound.

I am pretty sure when I installed my aFe, it had a CARB sticker on it. I could be mistaken, since I live in Canada where we don't use that system, but I thought I saw it on there.

From aFe, maybe you guys who are working under this emissions system will understand it:

Is my aFe intake system "street" or emission legal?

Air intake systems do alter the stock intake tract and therefore, requires an exemption from CARB emission requirements. As a California based company aFe submits our intake systems to CARB for exemption so that the intake system can be used legally on the street. However, obtaining CARB exemption takes time and not all aFe intake systems are exempt. Many aFe intakes have CARB EO numbers making them 50-state legal. All products that have received a CARB EO number are clearly marked on the product landing page.

When an aFe intake system is not exempt, they would be legal only in racing situations and not for street use in the 13 states that have adopted California emission standards. Contact our customer service dept @ 877-512-8111 to find out if a particular intake system is CARB exempt or not or check your local or state regulations.

Please take no offense for all of the new MINI people out there.... Porthos is truly correct on this. I've talked to many vendors on the telephone and for the most part, the have welcomed my questions and have proven very nice. Call them and introduce yourself. Ask your questions.
