Selling my Cooper S tomorrow - and picking up my new Justa! Need private sale tips!

So, I'm registered in AL but have a part time home in GA.

A buyer in Macon saw it on AutoTrader and wants to buy - I was going to trade it tomorrow!

So, what we've devised is: I'm driving the car to his credit union in Macon, he looks it over and assuming all is good, we execute the sale in his CU. Then, he's going to drive me back up to Atlanta to pick up my new car.

Kind of crazy that he's this interested sight unseen (and having written ads warning people about fraud, I'm on my guard). But I did lower my price a bunch (from $16,800 to $14,900) and calls started coming in. If I walk out of the bank w/ cash, it seems like it would be hard to rip me off.

Are there any tricks to an out of state private sale? I assume I transfer my AL title to him, write, sign and notarize a bill of sale, and then he's responsible for titling and registering the car in GA?

I have a custom AL plate I prefer to take with me - I assume he is responsible for getting his own tag?

Anything else I should think about or be aware of? Do you have a link to a good bill of sale?

Thanks for any and all suggestions!

Stephen

He called Thursday, I've been in NY on business working my tail off, and the only day of the week I can be in Georgia to take delivery is on Saturdays.

So, if I want to make an extra couple thousand bucks, it's do it today or delay delivery of my new car for a week or more.

Is transferring an out of state title a major paperwork nightmare? I thought you signed, notarized and that was about it.

Come to think of it, I did this exact thing (AL title sold to GA buyer) in 08 and don't recall any drama. I'm going to see if I can find that bill of sale.

If it's anything like it is here in NJ, there is no big deal, just sign the title over to the buyer and you can even write a bill of sale on a napkin, as long as you both sign it.

You need to take the tag with you! In GA we have to turn the plate in or transfer it at the tag office to the new car.

If you transact at his CU, sign the title over there, take off your plate, take the cash and go.
Simple.
Make sure to fill out a bill of sales as well.

Is he paying cash or financing thru his CR?

The only thing that could go bad is if the buyer changes his mind when you get there.People are funny sometimes.

Hmmm. Here in AZ if you trade a car, you don't pay sales tax on the portion of the new price. I was going to sell my car, but the difference ended up not making it worth the effort.

I find a Justa suits me better. My 08 Cooper S had sport suspension, and the combination of that and the torque steer made it seem twitchy to me. The new car has a much more supple ride and seems to have much more predictable handling...

Everything went super fast and smooth with the sale. Cashier's check from the credit union in hand. Hopefully everything will deposit fine.

Getting a CarFax for your vehicle will take a lot of the "mystery" out of your vehicle's ownership, repair, and accident record, as well as support your asking price. My sales advert noted the CarFax, and everyone (3 of 3) who came to look at the vehicle asked for it. BTW, I have no financial connection to CarFax, and the first looker bought the car!

Justa Cooper, or a Non-S model (no turbo or supercharger)

Thanks, I appreciate your response, this is my first time on this site and I'm not so familiar with some of the slang used...
