Custom paint on a new MINI

Okay, not that I am actually going to do this, but I've seen designers do some wild designs on a MINI.

Curious how this is done. Since MINIs today have clear coat, and sometimes metallic paint, if one wanted to go crazy painting a spectacular design, what steps are required to do it correctly?

What type of paint? Is it necessary to prime it?

Anyone know?

With the excellent graphic work being done with wraps today that would be the course I would go, no damage to MINI and easy removal to make selling at a later date much easier

To answer the question, you just have to scuff the surface of the clearcoat with some 800 wet/dry sandpaper. Then paint, then more clear. Color as md and polish. Done.

I would bet that both of them are wraps.

Thanks to all for the excellent info. RichardSperry - thanks. That was what I was originally thinking.

Wraps are probably the way to go - thanks for that tip.

Question about wraps - maybe this needs it's own thread- but does anyone know the longevity of wraps?

I would expect that they dry out, get bleached by the sun, etc.

Also - can they really be removed easily with no damaged to the paint?

I am going to kick a hornets nest again with this but, that Paul Weller Mini is the most god awful, ugly Mini ever made and a waist of a nice car. Sorry, I know was a good cause and his heart was in the right place but, couldent he done something a little more tastefull? He may have raised more money if it was a car people accually wanted to buy or own.

Not my taste either - but to each his own I guess.

I like the idea, the stripes I mean, especially if its just vinyl. The colors choosen on the other hand I think are terrible, but as stated above. To each his own.

Waist: The part that holds your pants up,

Waste: Unwanted or useless material...

Just saying...

I love Paul Weller and his music, but I threw up a little in my mouth when I saw that MINI... Almost as hideous as the Hello Kitty one I saw the other day... *blech*

I have to say, I like the Paul Weller one. But then, I'm a girl. Not a super girly-girl, but I like the pink & brown combo. I can definitely see the lack of appeal for a lot of people, though.
