Coopers > Mustangs

yes i know, the thread title is obvious... but hear me out.

I was part of a local mustang car club since about 2005 until last year when I sold my mustang for my r53.

I am still sorta friends with some of the members, but never post on the board anymore. Tonight I posted a thread with pics and specs of my new mini and the first reply i got was:

"Sweet mother of gay.......
........Unless your a 16 year old girl or pulling off an Italian job you should not be driving a mini. Those things are maybe a half step above a VW bug."

of course that club is full of closed minded people who are bigoted and raciest 80% of the time...

Apples > oranges.
A real car vs an "American" car.
Yes, Mustangs have their followers. Unless you are talking about a 67 GT fastback, it's all brand loyalty.

My last car was an '02 mustang gt, and it was very nice :-) clean looking, tastefully modded, etc.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3290/...56d4c9ba_o.jpg

about the only thing i liked more about it than i do my cooper, was the sound of the exhaust.

my jcw is noticeably faster than the mustang was. from a stop and from a roll on the highway. i've never raced either on the street and only the mustang at a 1/4 track, but the cooper is worlds ahead of the mustang was.

i've had to defend my car choice to a bunch of my friends, but for the people on that board, i'm not even going to bother. they have always hated on me for my political and religious views, so i quit trying long ago.

only posted it here for a laugh :-D

I also was a Mustang owner - and I probably would own one again if I had $30k to toss away. Mustang torque is fun, V8 sound is nice. But crashing the brakes and the front end diving in a hard corner kind of ends the discussion about Mini vs Mustang. If the Mustang guys would open their minds and take a twisty road drive....

Why would they go for a twisty drive? It's all about going fast in a straight line and then stopping slowly.

I've owned 4 Mustnags in my life, 79, 84, 93 & 03.

They a wonderful cars for what they are designed to do. A MINI is designed for a very different purpose....

Your Mustang buddies need to go for a ride with you that includes several on ramps, off ramps and hairpins.

I too have had mustangs. They are lots of fun. The mustang is more primative and raw. The mini is far more refined and tactile. The mustang is like going camping in the woods and the mini going to a resort hotel. Both are fun but in diffrent ways. I don't get why people hate on minis, I think if they would drive one they would understand.

I had a Mustang closer to original than most mentioned here: a '73 Mach 1. That car was a beast, and not in a good way. Then again, it was all stock and in original condition. American cars, even good, modern ones, feel disconnected to various degrees. MINIs, otoh, feel like an extension of myself when I'm driving them. Love it.

I far prefer the MINI community to the Mustang community.

That being said, I still love both my Mustangs as well as our MINI. As far as close-mindedness goes, there are a lot of people who make fun of MINIs who probably have never driven one, just like there are a lot of people who are still under the impression that Mustangs can't handle. A $30k 2011 Mustang GT would handily defeat a 2011 MINI (JCW even) on a typical road course. Obviously, 400hp helps, but as Motor Trend showed recently, even with a couple MORE horsepower, the M3 essentially tied the new Mustang GT on a road course.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love our MINI, I've driven it a Sebring and Road Atlanta, etc., but just like people shouldn't underestimate the fun/performance of the MINI, people shouldn't underestimate the Mustang's overall performance either.

2011 is different story and completely different stang but prior they were not the best in the handling department.

It really is apples to oranges. If that's the response you get, you have to tell yourself they don't understand, especially if they have never driven anything else. I grew up as a Chevy motorhead up until I bought my old '02 MCS back in July '05, having had two Monte Carlo SS' ('85 and '86) and an '88 IROC-Z Camaro. I am an all-around motoring enthusiast. One of my favorite local hangout rides is a purple '66 Mustang with a 393 stroked Windsor block that runs 11.60s in the 1/4 mile and 10.70s on the gas. I rode in it once. You talk about raw power. But that's not the same as taking twisties in your MINI.

The factory-stock handling has improved significantly over the last several years, that's for sure. Because the factory setups were so poorly setup for handling, though, it didn't take much to make a huge difference. Point being, my MINI handles great, way better than my Mustangs did when stock, but that's changing (2700lb Foxbody w IRS), and there are a lot of Mustangs out there that would surprise the average MINI driver... despite more of them being modded for straight line work.

I was at a light and a nice Roush Mustang pulled up on my left. He was trying to look all badazz but his cute girlfriend was smiling at me.

He snuck a sideways glance at me and I smiled and gave him a thumbs up. He grinned big and everything was cool.

Then the light changed and I SMOKED him!!

KIDDING...kidding...he was turning left.

Having been in two Mustang clubs, there are some good people and lots of close minded jerks.

That post on your mustang forum was crazy. I like how simpletons are quick to use the word gay for anything they dislike. Which even bothers me at my work place.

To each his own.

I still have my Mustang which is being kept in storage by a friend of mine.

Current job requires me to travel a lot.

I love all sports cars, each one is different in its own way.

Wow, it sounds like quite a few of us either have had or still have a Mustang. I'm the original owner of a '98 Mustang that just keeps running .

I agree with statements repeated several times that it's like comparing apples to oranges. The two cars are different animals. The Stang is an Amercian muscle car. The MINI is a Euro hothatch. The term "hothatch" is not really in the American lexicon.

MINI's seem childish to rednecks because of their size. Size is all that matters to some as if it was an extension of their privates. If it's small they think, it must be a misfit; like comparing a Shetland pony to a Clydesdale. What rednecks don't likely understand is that when it comes to performance, engine output is only one of many factors to engineering, especially good engineering that has racing intentions with all that entails. This is where the MINI and a host of other race-bred hothatches (not to mention many sports cars) from Europe can often embarrass the old tried & true American muscle car.

As Blainestang said earlier, the newest muscle cars, namely the 2011 Mustang GT and Camero SS are getting much better. GM went to their Australian Vauxhall division to borrow chassis bits to get the Camero to a world-class standard. Ford is feverishly working on the Mustang and is making significant strides transforming it into a real driver's car instead of a one-trick pony. I welcome these improvements, but regardless of how much better these cars get, this in no way diminishes MINI from being one of the best-in-class and affordable enthusiast's car on the street or track today.

Ford went directly to the track (Grand-Am series) to design the car then "homologated" for street use.

This topic is biased. It's made to make Mustang owners out to be complete dirtbags. Well, in all honesty, in the American muscle car groups, Mustang owners can be the most conceited. However, in the hatchback/small car groups, MINI owners can be some of the most obnoxious and conceited. So where does it end? It doesn't. Every car genre is going to have it's share of high horse riders and you can't let it get to you. Oh, and the new Mustangs.....they do well in the twisties. Again, as someone stated above, totally different cars. If anyone gets offended by something negative said about their car, you might want to bump up your self esteem a little because in the end, it's your choice in the car YOU want. Nobody can take that away from you. It might not be an American car, but it's your American right!!! To the OP, don't let your old forum people get to you. I can't wait to see the responses in here when I post pictures of the new Buick I'm trading my MINI in on later this year. Oh, and to end this, at least MINI didn't add a dashboard flower vase as standard equipment.

Hey , I almost bought a 2011 Mustang before deciding on a Mini. The Mustang with its new 305 HP is an OUTSTANDING car especially with the 6 speed manual trans. Check the performance numbers the V6 base Mustang is 1 1/2 seconds quicker 0-60 than my Mini. I love my Mini but Ford has done a great job with the Mustang.

Theres No Perfect Car!

I absolutely LOVE my '02 MCS and plan on driving it for many more years. It's a blast to drive but it's not everything. Not everone is looking for the same thing in a car. I grew up driving american muscle cars, '67 & '95 Mustangs, '67 Camaro, '64 Impala SS, '59 and '66 Corvettes. Currently along with my MCS I also have a '36 Chevy Coupe Streetrod, 327 cross-ram w/ a 5-speed. I take advantage of the attributes of the MCS to the point I even take it to the track once in a while. I've thought about jumping into heavily modding my MCS but, no matter what I do it will never give me the same sensation pure american muscle does when you hit the hammer. The brutal acceleration and sound of an american small block or big block is sweet. Would I ever take my '36 Chevy to Watkins Glen like I do my MCS? Hell no, but from stop light to stop light on the blvd you can't wipe the smile off my face, the same smile I have with the MCS going though some great twisties. Point is there is no perfect car for everything, so I plan on having multiple cars forever.

I've owned a 1970 Pontiac GTO, a 1996 Mustang Cobra, and a 1997 Roush Stage II Mustang. Muscle cars are GREAT fun.

Yesterday, did a BMW CCA auto-x.

There was only one Mustang Cobra there, it was a 1997. He ran a 104.828 best lap time, and me and the other modified MINI S there both ran 104.973 and 104.852. (And a 2005 Corvette ran a 110.28 best time - although a couple other Corvettes were in and around 100 seconds)

It was about half twisty and half sweeper course, so not necessarily an advantage for small or large cars.

I'll bet some in the muscle car crowd would be surprised to see MINI's competing head to head with a Cobra. Didn't see if he had any modifications, but stock that is a 305hp V8.

Variety is the spice of life though. It's much more fun to enjoy and appreciate other cars then to just make uninformed or inexperienced comments.

Sure, sometimes I feel a little silly driving the MINI. But, it's just way too much fun to care about.

This was my 1996 Cobra. (Talk about fender gap. Oh the horror!)
