Looking to buy a Mini again....
Looking to buy a Mini again....
...and quite a few people have told me to stay clear of the 02-05 model years and to buy the 06 and newer due to reliability and maintenance issues with the older years. Is there any merit to this claim? I was looking to pick up an low mileage R53 MCS, but I don't want to pay less for the car just to spend more to upkeep it if there truly are legitimate concerns with the older years.
The car I am looking at is an 03 MCS, Dark Silver, Stock, 38,000 miles, 6-speed, and looks flawless. The maintenance has been up to date, the power steering pump was just replaced, and the tires and brakes are in good shape. Are there certain things I should look for or plan on replacing? Just curious to see what the consensus is on the R53 MCS vs. the R56. I have heard that the MPG is better with the turbo S over the s/c which is to be expected, but how much better? I am buying a Mini to use as a daily driver, nothing excessive, but I am tired of driving my C6Z06 every day and wanted something that gets better mpg and something that I can enjoy owning. My wife and I had a Mini back in 04. We bought it new, had it for just over 2 years and had zero issues with it...but again, it was new. As they age, are the R53's simply prone to having issues?
Thanks,
Scott

I own a 2003 R53 with under 78k on it and my only problems were the power steering pump and my H/K Audio Amp fried out causing me to dump about $1000 into my car stereo system. It sounds like the car you are considering has been well-cared-for. I'd make sure I was aware of market pricing, negotiate from strength and have a 3rd party take a look at the car's powertrain, body, frame and check a history report and any maintenance you can find on the vehicle.
hopefully it's a good buy--
I like the R53 alot, the lack of turbo lag off-sets the drop in HP compared to the R56 and the interior has a more classic MINI look. Let us know what you end up doing!

Don't be afraid!
If you like the R53 over the R56 buy one! I personally love the S/C version so I looked for a well maintain R53. Find something with a solid history w/ paperwork and you should do fine. I bought an '02 MCS last December w/ 73K on it, clean CARFAX, rust free southern car, and a full maintenance history from a private owner. He had documentation for everything, new PS pump & fan, new clutch. even every oil change. I use it as my daily driver, I have even taken it to the track and had no issues. So, find yourself a car you like and ENJOY!
Like any car the earlier versions are less developed than the later.
However, this is just a generalization and there are great 02s, the first year, and there are bad 06s.
I have an 04 which has been a dream, currently at 64k.
As the others have said, have it check by a qualified shop and then enjoy.

I dont think you can get a specific answer to this. Really should be preferance.. Historicly, they all have quirkey issues... My 06 GP ( which is hardly driven ) has seen the shop as much as my 02MC, 04MCS, and 08 ClubmanS. Personally, I would go R53. For the reason of the future replacement of the supercharger compaired to the Turbo. Im sure you can search cheaper prices, but going by the dealer price guides, the turbo will be at least 1k more to replace down the line.
One of my buddys has a 02MCS with over 200k on it, and most of the parts are origional... even the clutch. My 04MCS is in the hands of a friend, and has had minimal issues out side the normal stuff..( window regulators, therostat leak, brake fluid tank leak, the NOW known steering issue, clutch squeel ect...) So its a real crapshoot..
The 08 ClubmanS wasnt with out the general second gen issues... So if you are looking for just the fun side of owning a MINI, I would go R53, but neither for the reliablity side, they all seem to have there own set of issues... If you want preaty much trouble free fun, get a Scion... ( on our 2nd gen 1 Xb, total of over 100k between the 2, neither has seen a shop since the day of purchace for any reason)( ok, did have to buy oil filters..) We do still have 2 06MCS's for the fun factor, and Scion and FJ Cruiser for the dependability.

That sounds like my old MINI - except mine had a Ultik K&N CAI and Magnaflow exhaust.
Only problem I had was the thermostat going out during the 6 years I had it.

So there are no major fatal flaws with them that I should look for, that is what I am most curious about. I have a long background in RX7's, so I am all too familiar with gremlins and random issues regardless of make, model, year, etc... I just wanted to make sure that there was not a list out there of known issues that are simply bound to occur. The powersteering pump seems to be one of the most common issues which this one has recently had replaced, the other issue was the deformed shock towers, but I just had people start saying not to buy an R53 or to only buy an 06 so I was confused since I am green to the Mini world even though I owned 4 years ago, but it was problem free so I never worried or looked into the issues of that time.
For pricing, are people paying close to private party KBB prices right now or are you getting the prices for around trade-in value? This one is priced at $11.3k and is in excellent condition inside and out w/ 38k miles on it. No nav, but it has some added features for the MCS, but nothing big. KBB in good condition is $10.6k I think for private party and $11.4k for excellent condition. I am hoping to get the car around $10-10.5k, just curious what the market is currently sitting at in this economy for these cars.
Thanks for the information, please feel free to share more if you have input. I'm curious to learn more to make as much of an educated decision as I can.

Not sure how much people are paying for used cars right now.
I think all cars have gremlins of some sort. If you look around this forum you can see that the MINI us no exception and it has its own slew of common problems depending on year and options.
To be safe with your purchase, ask if you can see any maintenance records that the previous owner has, or if you can take it to your mechanic to have it looked at. Another option is to see if you could have MINI check out the MINI. They can tell you is the software is out of date or not. That may in itself be a good idea of how well maintained the car was - although that may cost a bit of money.
