CARB/SMOG

Has anyone had any experience with a car registered in a different state (DE in my case) having any troubles with smog/carb?

I already had it smog checked for my DE registration. But it's still stock.

Is it possible to get ticketed for having non CARB-Approved parts, if your car is not registered in CA?

Can they fail your smog check on the visual part, even if your state doesnt require a visual inspection, just emissions?

I know you can get a ticket for tint, even if you aren't a CA resident.

CARB is evil! So glad to be out of California (one of a million reasons, but I digress).

That said - you won't have any problem with a stock car. Perfectly legal to bring into CA as long as it was legal where you purchased it. Also, I doubt there is any additional equipment that would make it CARB-legal anyways.

It's incredible that CARB has such outrageously stringent rules, but CA doesn't even do an annual safety inspection of any kind. All kinds of unsafe clunkers running amok. But theoretically they're at least all smog-legal.

Well, its already here in CA, been here since April.

Just wondering if they can nab me for mods, even if im not registered in thier state.

(kinda like how DE doesn't require or even give you front plates, but CA does, and i cant get in trouble for that.)

They would nab you for not registering in CA first...

Edited to add:

Take it from someone who has had his share of not so friendly - Register it here now or else - warnings in a number of locations.

Ah! You're military? Your car does not require registration in CA and CARB has no impact on you so long as you don't choose to register it there. On my warning above I typed "Unless you're active military" and deleted it.

Not to sound to much of a cliche, but thank you for your service.

lol thanks.

No way i would be here in CA if i wasnt...

Was mainly worried about getting stopped, them asking to pop the hood, and seeing pulley, intake, exhaust, and anything else i decide i want. Can they get me for that? DE doesnt care whats under the hood unless it passes emissions...

I've tried googleing, but its hard when im not registered in state.

Your legal assistance office should have a writeup on this question, but the short answer is, unless you want to register or sell your vehicle in CA, no CARB regulation will apply. They cannot require you to have CARB-exempt stickers or anything like that for any part you modify.
