Near miss with Audi

So I was crossing over the street from a parking space in order to turn right at the next intersection when I almost hit this Audi. I slammed on the brakes and felt the ABS kick in. Literally an inch away from this door. The guy wasn't even planning on turning right but was just speeding by and using the lane to cut the traffic ahead. See how the lane doesn't continue ahead. Typically only buses (notice the bus stop) or cars turning right use that lane. Anyway, still would of been my bad.

Forgive my confession.

Glad to hear that your MINI Guardian Angel was on the job and you & your car are alright! A corollary of Murphy's Law pertaining to driving; "Always expect the other drivers near you to do the worst possible traffic manuever at the worst moment in time." That said, I love these cars.

That was lucky for you it seems like it'd be you at fault if there was a collision (unless the lane is specifically a bus lane/right turn lane). Glad you and your MINI are okay.

That dashcam is pretty cool. I can see where it'd be useful.

When I have a "near miss" like that once in a while, I take it as a warning to re-assess my driving habits and drive more carefully (a month ago, I nearly backed into a pole--but who paints poles black anyways?!).

So is your dash cam always on? How many tapes do you go through?

I would have shed a tear had you hit the S6. Like the dashcam.

+1

Driving with that attitude has kept me from a few accidents.

It looks like you made a "lazy turn". You should turn left in to the nearest left lane (where the silver car was), but you turned out and crossed multiple lanes. Once in your lane, then you make a lane change into the next lane over.

I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but I see people turning right and winding up in the left lane and vice-versa all the time, worst case causing accidents and at best slowing down traffic.

Wow I would have been cussing that guy. I would have not been quiet about it. I have some serious rage issues cause everyone in my opinion drives like they have brain damage.

I know in my case, that may not have been a good thing. When I met my wife, well, let's just say that the hood of my Corvette needed buffed after that night.

Good thing I didn't have a dashcam...

The Audi didn't do anything negligent if there would have been an impact. He was established in that driving lane and lacning would have been at-fault for Improper Lane Change and FTPFTAA (Claim Rep speak for Failure To Pay Full Time And Attention).

Now, if the Audi had been involved in an accident in the intersection ahead, he would have had one big thing going against him... that lane was for right turns only, obviously.

Lucky for you, you have cat-like reflexes.

Man, I wish all cars had video cameras installed and ran continuously. Sure would make my job a LOT easier !!

Funny you mention black poles. About a year ago I parked next to a car at a motel, whose owner was trying to get into the trunk. Fresh rear-end damage. I commented on her bad luck, and she told me she'd backed into a black pole at the motel.

The moral is, be careful of the black pole at the Super 8 at Tillman's Crossing, Mobile, AL...

I'd be aware of just staying at a Super 8 anywhere in AL.

Well, actually, if you have the misfortune of traveling between Houston and Clearwater, Florida, Tillman's Corner is mid-way, and makes a great stop. Every motel/hotel chain is there, and Super 8 has free wireless...

I say "misfortune" because there is no other way than I-10, and everyone knows MINIs are allergic to straight, flat, and boring roads.

But they do have a black pole out front.

Wow... damn near perpendicular crossing two lanes of traffic.

I'm seeing why you have a dashcam driving around all those nuts in NYC.

Idiocy, indeed, but it's also a bit confrontational.

There are better ways to convey your feelings!

How much of the time is your camera on?

Haha. Screw that. I would totally have laid on the horn as he cut across the street like that... or sped up to block him... but I think a part of me is a bit self-destructive, so maybe you don't want to do that.

I thought New Yorkers carried bats, crowbars, or tire irons for just such an occasion.
