Gas cap warning light

OK, so first part of the week the gas cap check light has come on, first time I've seen it. Checked the cap and clicked it, light went out, next day light comes on again, checked cap, light out then light comes on again after about 5-10 miles of driving, this has gone on for 5 days. Of course I was at the dealer last weekend (4 hr roundtrip) but this came up this week. This morning clicked the cap before leaving the house and at about the 5 mile mark the light comes on, clicked the cap again and it stayed off for 1/2 mile. By this time I needed gas, so filled it up, clicked cap light went off and about 2 miles later on it goes...but then it mysteriously goes off and stays off. I'm almost possitive it has nothing to do with the cap, so what is causing the damn light to come on?
Any thoughts? what do I need to check?
Thanks in advance!

Did the dealer do any work related to the fuel system. If so check around the car for any leaks. Outside of going back to the dealer thats all I can think of.

The dealer was taking care of rattles and noises and nothing related to gas cap, fuel delivery, etc.

My 03' MCS with 72,000 miles just started doing this today. Exactly as you described. Maybe it's just me but it seems like the gas cap twists off easier than usual too. Doesn't take much to break the seal and it seems like it should be a tighter fit.

It was at the dealer last week too but there was no fuel system work done, only had the JCW Sport Brake kit installed..

Haven't had any issues with my gas cap but... my gas door seems to be pushed out a little more than it should be and doesn't sit flush with the side panel. It looks like its not fully closed and sticks out a little. Anyone know how to tighten the gas door for it to sit flush to the body. Thanks and sorry if its a little off topic....

First check and make sure that the black rubber cap line is not getting in the way of the chrome cover. If that is not the case then check the black barrel pin on right which locks the chrome gas cap door shut see if it is not hanging it up. Maybe it needs some WD40 from grit buildup.

If all that is ok then maybe the bracket for the chrome fuel filler cap door was bent somehow when filling up ? Open chrome fuel cap, it is attached to the arm bracket with one #30 torx screw on . Remove torx screw then cap, see if the bracket needs some tweaking. Shouldn't be much. Re-attach the chrome filler cap door and check alignment....

its okay! Thanks for the attempt I park in a parking garage with about 3 other minis and my gas door noticeably sticks out more than theirs... I was hoping I could adjust it some how.

Not sure if the hinge is adjustable or not. Try going to www.realoem.com and take a look at the schematic for that assembly, Maybe that will give us a clue. It would make sense that there is some sort of way to adjust it.

Maybe the actuator is adjustable, if that is what keeps the door closed ?
