Hey, have you guys seen the website "Together We Served?" There's one for each service, and it's a great way to connect to old military friends/co-workers - kinda like the military FaceBook if you will. Here's the main site, and the services site (sorry, looks like the Coast Guard's site is still under construction):

http://www.togetherweserved.com/
http://army.togetherweserved.com/army/index.jsp
http://navy.togetherweserved.com/usn/index.jsp
http://airforce.togetherweserved.com/usaf/index.jsp

Best fun I had in the Navy was defending a baby chief . . .

I truly envy you guys that got to serve overseas. I guess it was because I was so eager to express my interest in serving outside CONUS that they kept me locked-up at Beale AFB, CA for two years. I was bored to death since I was put in a job that had nothing to do with my AFSC (air cargo on a base that got no air cargo).

USAF 1976-1978 Beale AFB

Then took advantage of Palace Chase option to transfer into Air National Guard in Willow Grove, PA from 1978-1983.

Hey, stop by and see my in Hawaii anytime!

Well, any time I'm actually in HI. Odds are betting of finding me in Iraq first, though.

Did you take part in the patching ceremony, putting a combat patch on your right sleeve?

And in return we black-shoes could let you stand the mail buoy watch for a while, or maybe tell you where on the ship to go to fetch a couple of yards of water line...

Geeze, yes. But the kicker for that was: the command insisted on doing that after being deployed only TWO MONTHS, and while we sat in Kuwait as the first real THeater Reserve. Kick in the pants - teaching young and inexperienced soldiers to think that sitting in Kuwait training was REAL combat. They were slightly more surprised when we were actually moved north, and DID get involved with "real" combat. (P.s. I use the term "combat" losely - not based on any particular approved definitions, by the way.)

My father was in WWII and Korea, and retired as a US Army Major in 1964 after 20+ years of service.

I was born in Fort Benning, GA, and graduated from West Point in 1969.
I served in Vietnam and eventually retired as a Full Bird from the Maine Army National Guard where I served as a Chaplain.

What, you don't consider nukes to be air cargo?
I brother was at Beale from about 1972-76 after he left U'Tapao.

I was lucky enough to hitch a ride on one of the last diesel subs in service - the USS Gudgeon. They did put me on watch for the mail buoy when we were cruising on the surface. I guess they are hard to spot - I never did see it during my 4 hour watch . . .

Wow!!!!

You had me for a minute there. Didn't know what you were talking about. Yes, I was a 605 - 60530 Air Passenger Specialist. I ended-up at Beale as a 60531 Air Cargo Specialist. In either case there were no pax and no cargo to speak of. We spent most of our duty days playing rod hockey, pong on a little 13 inch TV or cards. We had one flight a week if we were lucky. My most embarassing moment was getting caught doing an early version of Karaoke with the terminal PA system when we assumed the place was deserted (again) by a full bird colonel. He reamed me out but I could see him holding back laughter as he did.

The Air Guard was almost as dull, but at least there we had the opportunity to run into Philly to kill time.
