US Navy submariner 1986 - 1989.
USS Louisville SSN724

I wish I could say that I enjoyed it but I didn't. Worst decision I have ever made in my life but I am glad that I served my country.

The rest of the story
In USAF, stationed at
Chanute (twice),
Dugway Proving Grounds Utah,
Offutt AFB NE,
Tehran Iran (before & during the revolution - fun
),
Ramey Puerto Rico (made up for Iran),
Finthen Army Airfield Germany,
Peterson AFB CO,
USAF Academy CO,
Cheyenne Mtn AB CO,
Palmerola Honduras,
Peterson again, retire.
Went to lovely Thule
http://www.wunderground.com/global/stations/04202.html
because of good tax-free pay, free room & board, 60 days paid vacation a year, free med. & dental, free air anywhere in US twice a year. And it was nice if you didn't have to go outside
.
And where else would a meteorologist get the chance to do a forecast like this:
"Cold today, cold tonight, long-range forecast - cold... with a chance for snow." every day of the year?

hmmm -
I stayed pretty much in small units or, when at Offutt (Global Weather Central) I was in the Solar Forecasting unit, then at Solar observatories in Iran & P.R., not to mention my time "serving"
with the Army in Germany (loved the locale, hated the job).

It amazes me that military families tend to generate more military members! I'm the first female in my family, but we go wayyyy back.
Husband: Army
Brother: Army
Dad: USMA '74 then went USMC
Uncle (dad's side): USMC (mustang - enlisted, Warrant, Officer)
Grandfather (dad's side): Navy (mustang)
Uncle (mom's side): USMC
Uncle (mom's side): USMA '74, then Army
Uncle (mom's side): USMA '75, then Army Chem Corps
Grandfather (mom's side): US Army Air Corps (WWII) - belly gunner mechanic
Misc grand-cousins -- Army Air Corps (MIA); Army, etc. WWII
Grand-cousin (Mom's side): GET THIS! He was Army - a blacksmith for Custer. Got drunk before the night of the Big Stand and stayed in the rear with the other blacksmiths. Everyone in the family thought he had died during the last stand, when suddenly he shows up on their Boston doorsteps!
Anyway...I've always thought of the service as part of my extended family. I know SO many people in so many locations, and we all have a bond of some sort (that can be good and bad); we can pick up a conversation left off years before and it's like we never stopped.

4 years active U.S.M.C. A-4M ordnance-VMA-223 "Bulldogs"/VMA-311 "Tomcats"
then 2 years inactive reserve
completely out for a year then began to miss the life
then a little less than 3 years U.S.M.C. F-4 Phantom II's ordnance VMFA-112 "Cowboys"
I would have stayed in way longer but it cost more to travel to and from my duty station in DFW area from the El Paso area than I was making.
One uncle-Army
Other uncle-U.S.M.C.
Dad-U.S.M.C.
Grandfather-U.S.M.C.
3-stepbrothers-U.S.M.C.
12 year old daughter is going crazy waiting for the day she can attend Annapolis so she can eventually be a leader of Marines!

Too bad we never got to serve together. We could'a taught each other a few things. I could have taught you how to back splice the plimsoll line, you could have tried to teach me how to toe the line and we could have gone ashore and contested each other in splicing the main brace. You also might have been there to watch us surface a rusky Juliett somewhat north and east of Cuba.
