1500 miles cross-country and only 1 MINI spotted!
I just drove from Georgia to Colorado, 1500 miles (2 days, avg 36 mpg) and the entire way, kept an eye out for other MINIs.But I only spotted ONE and it was the MINI weenie-mobile from Oscar Mayer
!Do we acquire some sort of stealth mode on interstates? (Invisible to all except cops
)
Yes during winter driving you may run across a lot less Mini's on the road.
When I drove from South Florida all the way north to Minnesota back on May 20th for my daughter's High School graduation I encountered probably a dozen or so 1st and 2nd generation Mini's on the highway and 2 identical ones to my '08 CR/CR MCSa before my '09 replacement.

I still see quite a few in the winter. In fact I just saw one parked at the grocery store earlier. It doesn't matter how many I see though. I only count the ones that wave back. That's right! I am disowning other Mini owners who obviously don't wave back. ARGH!
Now that I think about it, when I drove to Miami from CT for MTTS, then back up to Boston...I don't remember seeing any other Mini's either. Obviously with the exception of the events.

I drove from Chicago to Memphis to Denver to San Fransisco this spring, only MINI spotting, 2am in middle of nowhere Kansas. It's all lick of the draw, besides the MINIs tend to gravitate to urban centers, further from a dealer, the slimmer the odds.
I was thinking about this thread all the way from Cincinnati to Jacksonville the other day and I saw 15+ MINIs along the way. When we cam out of lunch in Spartanburg, there were 3 in the parking lot - my kids were so excited. We made a game of it and logged the MINIs, where they were from and what model they were - its great to teach my 7 year old the difference between the R52, 53, etc...
I've seen them on all my vacations- big island of Hawaii, Ireland, Denmark. But in the U.S. it's mostly in urban centers- NYC, DC, Baltimore. I think the only reason it might be less desirable in country areas is the ride height making it easier to get stuck in deep snow and bottom out on rutted back roads. That and the distance of dealerships, of course.
Trying it again tomorrow
Well, I'm returning to Georgia from Colorado tomorrow - trying to decide if I should take the same route (TX-OK-AR...) or more north (KS-MO...) - hate the prospect of driving thru St. Louis
, but mapquest says it's nearly 100 miles shorter...

In Feb. of 2007 I drove from central Ga.{Milledgeville} to Dallas/Ft.Worth
and back and not one MINI. I was there two weeks driving a Co. truck aroung Tex., Western Ark. and La. and still no MINIs. At the time the weather wasn't that good so maybe everyone drove their [Beaters].

Home at last...
Just got home... took the TX-AR-GA route due to potential bad weather in KS-MO/
This time I saw 5 MINIs! 3 were around Amarillo, the other two near Little Rock, including one jerk in a gas station who acted perplexed when I parked next to him and said, "Neat car." "Hmmm? Whatever..." Oh, well...
Also got passed by a nice Bentley - sigh...
Anyway, got 35 mpg and am VERY glad I'm done driving long distances for a while...

There's your problem, you were on the interstate. The natural habitat for the MINI is twisty backroads. I imagine that you'd see a few out on the great black snake but only doing around MACH 5 to get from one driving location to another.
Interesting...........in late Oct early Nov when dimini and I drove his V-Tec P'up back from Mini Tek in northern Georgia to KC, we took nothing but back roads and saw maybe a dozen MINIs, but as others have said, mostly in towns. We saw very few out on the open roads.........and I don't understand why either, as the MINI is such a great road car to take a trip in....
